VXD and Registry Errors
Clean Build- Win98 Overclocked P2-350 to 400MHz. Would not boot, (manf after Aug 14th), After power down and power up set back to 350. Now Getting random VXD errors, (blue screen of death), with no regularity. Also getting random registry errors that do not occur at the same frequency as the VXD errors. Example- Install Office 97pro, gives corrupt file error, then registry error, then VXD error. Reboot, install Office Pro, no problem. Install Publisher, no problem. Started installing Mouse drivers....VXD error that will not clear out had to reboot? Is it a possibility that the chip is fried? Doesn't seem to me as though this would be the case for overclocking by 1 step (3.5x to 4.0x) and not even being that way for more than 20 seconds, but still anyone else heard of this problem? (Soyo 6ba+, Soundblaster Live, USR 56K, PCI network card, Riva TNT (I have swapped this card out with a known working Intel i740 with no change in status). Thanks
Try reinstalling W98, or let it sleep overnight. Sometimes it heals!
If reinstalling W98 or "letting it ..heal" doesn't do the trick I would look at the memory, or at least the memory settings, with serious suspicion.
Set it up with a 66mhz bus and see if the errors go away, if so, then possibly try more moderate memory timing settings.
