Overclocking Troubles PLEASE HELP ME!
I have a PII 300 Sl2yk processor on a Ax6b motherboard, which i am
overclocking to 450 Mhz.
And in win98 and winnt it runs very stable, no hangups or error messages, i
can write cds without any problem. Cpu temp, according to Aopens hardware
monitor is about, in normal windows use 30-34 degrees celsius, in games at
the most 39 degrees.
But when i play a game, unreal, halflife, colin mcrae, blood2 ,etc the
computer just reboots after a while without any message of any kind. And if
i start the game again i can play for a while and then it reboots again. And
this could happen after 5 sec, 5 min or 5 hrs of playing. It doesnt make
sense.
First i thought it was my isa cards, sound- and network adapters, that was
causing the problem. Because when i took those out, it worked perfectly.
Now i have replaced these cards with pci ditto, and the problem still
remains and it seems to be the soundcard that is causing it, a soundblaster
live Value, but i have tried other soundcards too, sb16 vibra and awe 64 and
none of them seem to work. WHY???
Is it any difference between running an overclocked cpu at 4,5*100 and a
genuine 450, which also runs at 4,5*100?
I have tried a different motherboard, Abit BH6, same problem.
Hope someone can help me im getting DESPERATE!!!!
My Hardware is:
Aopen Ax6b Motherboard
128 Mb Pc100 RAM
STB Velocity 4400 Tnt graphics adapter no tvout running at 2/3
Seagate Medalist Pro 7200 rpm 6,5 Gb
Adaptec 2902 Scsi adapter
Pci network adapter noname
Compro scsi cdwriter 4/8
Mitsumi 32x cdrom

try to slow down your RAM. i had to slow down my ram too after i overclocked. some games ran without any problems and others (like unreal) finished with error-messages after 10 or 20 minutes. when i set the wait states from fast to slow the problem dissapeared.
you said you would make your system as fast as possible. i think you have set the ram and other things in the bios to the fastest possible setting. try to slow down a few components. better run your system 3% slower without problems than 5 minutes between the reboots.

please tell me if it helps...

i have tried that. The problem seems to be the soundcard, but it should work in that speed, since the pci slots are not overclocked. can it be that im pushing the cpu to the limit?, because i cant run it at 464 Mhz 4,5*103, then win98 freezes at the splash screen. But it seems so strange since it runs so stable in windows applications, in win98, Winnt anf linux. An Winnt is more sensitive to overclocking, but it runs completely stable too. I think im going to try running unreal i Winnt and see if it is the same problem there, maybe its just win98 that is ****ing up.

Try moving your DIMM to the slot furthest away from your CPU.

You said, it seems to be the soundcard. Does that means that if you remove the soundcard, the computer does not freeze when playing the game? If so, what is your soundcard? It could be a bad driver.

The computer does not freeze, it reboots.
And i have tried different soundcards, Awe64 isa, sb 16 vibra isa and sb live value Pci.
earlier when i had the isa sound -and networkadapter it would reboot if i didnt pick those out, so i thought that it was isa-cards in general that was causing the reboot. But now i have replaced them with Pci ditto, and now it seems its just the soundcard that is causing it, i have tried to pick out every card and just have the soundcard in but its rebooting. If i have all the other cards except the sound card it works.
But i shall try to move my ram to slot 4, and see if it helps.
Thank you all very much for your suggestions,
and please send in more if you got any.

No, im pretty sure it isnt heat related, i have tried now with case open and fans blowing on the motherboard, temp is about 25 degrees celsius, i think its hard to get any cooler than that! Well, im giving it up now, i have tried everything the last 2 months and nothing seems to work. Going down to 374 Mhz, and await the forthcoming Amd K7, which hopefully rock hard. Anyway, thank you guys for your help, too bad it didnt help me though . But your welcome to send in more...

Do you know how hot your mother board gets?
(I think the bios displays it) What I am thinking is taht your sound card is getting too hot and the board like disconects it self from the board. If it is getting too hot try putting a fan by the board.
