Celeron 300a OC cooling and moore...

I have just ordered a 300a celeron and I'm planning on overclocking it. But what I want 2 know is:

if the OC is successfull, is it possible/a good idea 2 have it running 24h/day for a long time or does it require 2 be turned off from time 2 time.
I also wanna know how long I can expect it 2 work properly at 100x4.5. I've been reading a few FAQS where they claim that the chance of success is something likte 65% or 75% is that numbers accurate now in 1999? (abit bh6 and pc100)

Finally a question that r not exactly posted at the rigt place but anyway...

Does a crappy 2d card (like the s3 series) effect the perfomance of the voodoo2 card?)

Overclocking in itself is not going to change whether you should or should not turn your computer off. If it works it works.

Your CPU will reach its normal operating temp within 5 minuets of running. Therefore, turning your computer off will not be a cooling solution.

As far as fan/heatsink selection don't get caught up in the monster cooling fad that is the current rage. The new .25 micron CPU's don't run near as hot as the old .35 CPU's. I have two Celeron 300A's running at 450 24h/7d a week. Both run a simple Celeron heatsink with single fan. The temperatures are monitored on both with a temp probe at the center of each heatsink and run between 98 and 113 degrees Fahrenheit. This is well within the Intel heat spec. Running them at 450 vs. 300/66 causes an 8 to 10 degree rise in temperature. On my systems.

I don't recommend running any computer 24/7 unless it is necessary because of dust. You literally quadruple the dust problem. Most cases are designed with a power supply fan that draws air out of the case. This leads to a negative pressure in the case, causing air and dust to be drawn into the case from every crack and hole in the case. Make sure that your case has a front fan blowing air into the case. This will offset the negative pressure but from my experience not eliminate it unless the intake fan is a LOT more efficient than the exhaust fan. I think I got carried away again.

No your crappy S3 card will not affect the performance of your Voodoo2. Get a better 2D-card shezz, 450MHz screamer running in 1st gear.

Yep, I did get carried away.

How long will it last? As long as you run in the normal operating temp range it should last as long as if you didn't overclock it.

Will you get lucky? Who knows, at least your odds are much better than at Vegas. I have been lucky with three 300A's and a 266 that ran 300 for almost a year. It's on a shelf collecting dust at the moment waiting for a new home.

Hey Daniel,

Just a recommendation is all. Video card performance can make even the fastest machine feel slow. You should not have any problem getting your system running with the S3. I don't mean to make it sound like your new system will be as slow as a 486. You will do fine until you can grab a better video card.
