O/C Pentium II 400, why not???

    Hi!

I've been trying to oc my PII 400 to 448 my using 112 Mhz busspeed but it won't work. I have set my memory to the slowest possible setting but that doesn't change anything. I resently had a PII 350 at 112 Mhz busspeed with the fastest possible mem settings and it worked perfectly. Could it be that I have one of the worst PII 400 ever created?

I have something on my mainboard (Asus P2B) called pci latency timer wich is set to 32 pci clock, what is that?

the pci latence timer has nothing to do with your problem. it just sets how long a single pci-device may use the pci-bus before any other device may use it. leave it at 32...its optimal.
must be a problem with your CPU. I ran my AsusP2B at 133MHz bus-speed without any problems.
there's no guarantee that u can overclock a CPU.

Zulan, what are the symptoms? Do you get to a desktop? Does it refuse to even post at 448?

The P-II 350,400 and 450 are multiplier locked at 4.5. Your choices are limited to 450 @ 100 and 504 @ 112. I don't know how your board handles wrong selections, but maybe that is what you are seeing.

Then again, it really is the luck (or lack thereof) of the draw.

    I lied! See below.

Roy, where do you get these fnucked up facts man!?! The PII 350 is locked at 3.5, 3.5 * 100 = 350mhz. The PII 400 is locked at 4.0, 4.0 * 100 = 400 mhz, you get my point. Now, the 300's are meant for 66 mhz so they are locked at 4.5 and the 266's are 4.0 and the older 233's were 3.5.

What kind of hard drive do you have? What is your AGP clock divider? The PII 400 could be dissapating more heat than the 350 (duh) upon a certain periphal, i'd try feeling if the PII 448 is burnin after a while of processing, then you should get a new fan or try another case or cooling method.

The pci latency is something that allows the amount of clocks the PCI devices communicate with the isa devices, you can set it to the lowest if you have no ISA devices and get a 5% speed increase. But non usb devices such as serial, parallel, and PS/2 count as isa, and so does onboard ISA sound. Try disabling those first then see if it boots up at the 32 pci clock setting, then set it to the lowest. Happy tweakin. And you should try your 350 now with the 112 mhz bus speed and see if there is any differences.

    Oops!

I've had too many numbers running around in my head and not enough sleep. But do we need such language?
