Gigabyte Vs Abit

Hi there,

im building a system and i need some advice from knowledgeble people like you. I dont know much about motherboards since the last computer i made was a pentium 400, over 2 years ago.

I am considering getting one of these 2 motherboards and i would appreciate it if you could let me know which ones better.

1. Gigabyte GA-7DXR
2. Abit KG7 + Raid.

I already have
1.512MB of DDR PC2100 RAM
2. AMD Athlon 1.4 Mhz 266Mhz
3. Thermaltake Dragon Orb 3 Cooling fan
4. 3 Western Digital Drives (20 Gig, 40 Gig, 80 Gig) ATA 100.
4.Creative Live 5.1 Sound card
5. Visiontek Geforce 2 MX 64MB (This will be replaced with a Geforce 3 on my birthday)

I would like to overclock the computer as well if the motherboard permits, but if i cant thats okay.

So guys and gals.. which one do you think is a better buy with better reputation and features, other than the fact that Abit has 6 PCI slots and 4 memory slots , in contrast to the Gigabyte that has 5 PCI and 3 Memory slots.

I have heard conflicting thigns about the Abit, and have recently started hearing good things about Gigabyte.. so im a little confused... so please Help..

The price for both motherboards the same so thats not an issue .

Well, ABIT has been known to be the choice mainboard for severe overclocking and GigaByte always lacked the features to overclocking processors at their maximum. However, reading the review below for the Gigabyte GA-7DXR, looks like Gigabyte is adding some features for overclocking...

The Gigabyte GA-7DX was the first AMD761/DDR board that we reviewed and we were impressed by it¡¯s performance and stability. However, the lackluster features and no overclocking made this a very average board. Maybe Gigabyte read our review and decided to do something about it and maybe that¡¯s why we¡¯re looking at the GA-7DXR today.
