    mouse jitters

Need help with a mouse that jitters when moved quickly. No, that sounds wrong. The pointer goes back and forth before moving when I move it quickly. It doesn't matter in which direction. I've tested it with PS2 rate adjuster check speed app and it indicates the sampling rate drops to 1-12Hz when I move the mouse quickly. I've tried adjusting the sampling rate with PS2 rate adjuster also. There are no IRQ conflicts. It wasn't like this yesterday. I didn't change a single thing on my PC, hardware or software. No viruses either. Tried running at regular FSB too. The mobo's BIOS is up-to-date.

this might not be the right answer but have you tried another mouse to narrow it down to that???
it might just be less of a hassle(and cheaper) to return/replace it than pull your
hair out....just an idea. good luck.

I tried another mouse, different brand, and it's still there. Must be something wrong with the motherboard?

I'll go try a USB or serial mouse next.

First of all, if you used special drivers for it uninstall them then remove it in Device Manager and re-start. Use Windows drivers as some of those Logitech, etc. drivers are scary. Also, if you have anything on your system with the Norton name associated with it, try disabling it and see if that solves the problem. Anyway, I doubt seriously that it's a hardware problem.

Well, Toad, you're right. It's not a hardware problem. Just got home with a USB mouse and it's still there, though less pronounced now. I'm not using any third-party mouse drivers, just the driver Windows installs (PS/2 Comp. Mouse). I've tried disabling any Norton (which all I've got running is anti-virus). I'm guessing it's a Windows problem, something in the registry maybe?

Help???? As I've stated above, PS/2 or USB, the mouse just jitters when it's moved quickly. It doesn't jitter when it's not moving or moved at a moderate speed, but when it's flicked quickly in any direction, the pointer moves a little then stops, moves back some, back and forth back and forth until finally stops in the desired direction but not distance.

I tried that PS/2 Rate Adjuster's Check PS2 Rate utility and the frequency drops to 0Hz when the quick movement is done for both the PS/2 and USB meese. I've tried every option in the Mouse control panel; pointer speeds, slow and fast, and acceleration, disabled and enabled with different speeds. Nothing seems to fix it. Anybody know of any mouse-related key in the registry?
