Unhappy Philips 8x not actually burning cds???

I just bought a cd burner from Universal Computer Distributing based out of California. They sent me what was supposed to be a Philips burner, but i cannot find anything on it which would lead me to believe it is one. That isn't the problem, i will take it if i can get it to burn. It reads cds fine, and i can copy stuff from them, but it will not record. it locks up. I tried every version of adaptec imaginable, and this companies tech support is no help whatsoever, they only redirect me to adaptec website. I am getting very frustrated, i have tried it as slave, master, i have updated my ASPI to the recommended version. i don't know what else to do. This company only has a 7 day return window. any ideas??? thank you in advance for any input you have to offer.

    Thanks, Nathan

Nate, the drive should say right on the front of the drawer "cd-r" or the little compact disc logo will say recorder. Also, your software should detect it as a writer. Keep us posted.

Thanks, but it is a cd burner, it is an 8x/4x RW/32x read. My problem is it locks up when it attemps to burn. The windows default IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32 driver loads, which the tech support said this is correct. i am out of ideas. thanks for the input.

    Nate,

Do you have ANY other versions of "writing " software installed on your system? If so, GET RID of them all!!!! Use JUST ONE program.( whatever your choice is) I had the same problem, mine would NOT burn for nothing. Got rid of "Nero 5.0" and "Adaptec" from my system, then went back and reinstalled "Adaptec".
Then its been "BURN BABY BURN" ever since. Hope this helps.

    Question

OK... how about a little more information. What OS are you running? How much memory do you have? What are you trying to do? Burn from a CD-ROM to CD-RW... burn data from hard drive to CD-RW, etc...? What processor do you have in your machine? Um...What disks are you trying to use and what speed are they certified at?

That should keep you busy for a few minutes.

    Cool

    Hi mrjeep89,

DuhWhat is right. Give us more info. I would also ask about your CPU. Is it fast enough? You don't have a P100 w/ 16MB RAM, do you? (don't get offended, just asking). Also, when testing your CD-R don't try to burn "on the fly". Use a CD image instead.

As for the software I would recomend the latest version of Nero 5 as it uses your RAM for caching, preventing buffer underruns.

Good luck and keep us informed...

i have a 750 mhz athalon, with 128 mb of ram. i have tried everything but nero. i don't have access to that program. also, i am running win 98. i am not trying to go from cd to cd. i am just trying to burn off my hard drive. here is what happened. i now installed adaptec 4.02 and it started like it was working, started track 1 and then stopped, locked up or gave me the blue screen. i am not sure what "burn on the fly" means, i think the error is occuring with my buffering somehow, i am just not too sure what to do about it. is there any options anywhere that maybe i should try to turn on and off? i have been looking at other peoples burning problems. I do not know what speed my cds are certified at, but i will get some 8x certified cds and try them today.

    Thanks, Nathan

Thank you to all of you for your help with my problem. I tried Nero, and guess what. it worked. it burned a cd. unbelievable. i am still in shock. i don't know why adaptec didn't work. maybe it is my new athalon, i dunno. now my ONLY remaining question is how do you guys who use nero actaully rip the cds? i used to use adaptec but that **** program will never ever touch this hard drive again. like "jap" said, it will be "BURN BABY BURN!"

Thanks to everyone for your help. I really appreciate it.

    Yea thanks.

I had the same exact problem with the same exact CD Burner and the same exact Burning App. I have already made 4 coasters myself.
    I'll try Nero. Thanks.

P.S. It's not just your Athlon, my P233 MMX did the same thing.

    Follow up:

I uninstalled CD Creator. Went to get Nero and found that:
    A) The demo is only good for a week.
    B) The registered version costs $70.00
    C) I am still as cheap as ever

So I REINSTALLED CD Creator. (This time making sure it was V4.02d which they said fixed a lot of bugs.)
I tried to record and got another error. So I lowered my recording rate down from 8X to 2X and ran the test. It worked. I raised it up to 4X and ran the test. It worked again.

I actually burned the CD at 4X. It worked fine. I've burned 6 CD's now using CD Creator at 4x and they all worked fine and only took a little less than a minute for each song.

    I'm pleased.
