IRQ hassle w/ Win98 and PCI 128:
hello,
i have a machine that has Win98 w/ soundblaster pci 128 on it and in device manager i have an ! exclamation point next to "soundblaster PCI 128 legacy device".not next to where it has my other soundblaster stuff I.E.(creative gameport joystick, creative labs soundblaster pci 128,PC DVD Encore)
its because of an irq i know, but i cant free one up with the troubleshooter, and it doesnt seem to work when i shift my cards around.im sick of windows freezing when trying to shut down or reboot!!!!!! any ideas??? pleas help. thanx

the legacy stuff is just for playing and or hearing sounds in dos I would, and do just disable that then delete all the stuff it puts in the autoexec.bat file and forget about it.
unless you need it for some old dos game ?

Hi!
As you said it seems like its a irq
conflict or something similar.
Have you checked what devices that uses
the same irq? You can find this in
start->programs->accesories->System tools -> System information.
But, if it is a irq sharing violation you should at least have one device more that aint working cause to irq. If you have that, try to uninstall it, reboot, and install it again. You can also go into the properties of the device, and manually set another irq for the device. (Check with system information witch irq are free to use).
Don't know if this will be to any help, but I have had some problems at work with similar stuff (not gaming equipment though)
and it have worked for me.

hey,
problem is my nic card and pci 128 legacy like the number 5 for an irq. i tried moving the nic card into a different pci slot. no luck. so i just disabled it until i can find the fix. maybe if im not too lazy i'll move the soundcard around. who knows. just not enough irq's in the world. thanks

There should be a dos utility for your network card, which you can manually change the irq setting on the card itself.

Try this link and you'll find the utility and diagnostics software for your NIC. (try the drivers page as well)
http://www.realtek.com.tw/htm/downlo...8130%29&type=1
I don't have your model of NIC so i couldn't test it. Please let us know how things go.
Yes its possible to change the irq on NICS. I've done it numerous times for 3com cards.
Yes, you need to boot into dos, since its a dos utility.
Good luck!

no good. when i ran the diagnostic program it said that that nic wasnt installed, but it is. still s.o.l. though. i even tried my old intel nic, but the bastid wants the same irq number as well.

Go to system then device manger then s.b pci 128 then settings then remove the check mark from "legacy emulation enabled" that will diable the dos legacy & free up irq 5.
