    CD ROM DRIVE

    HI

CAN ANYONE HELP MY CD ROM DRIVE IS PLAYING UP ,WHEN MY SON GOES TO PLAY HIS NEWLY BOUGHT PC GAMES IT WILL NOT READ.
IT SOUNDS LIKE THE DISC IS BOUNCING UP AND DOWN.

ALSO JUST LATELY WHEN WE COME TO USE THE COMPUTER WE HAVE TO PRESS THE RESET BUTTON AS NOTHING COMES ON THE SCREEN,ONCE PRESSED THE SCREEN SHOWS ALL THE NECESSARY ICONS.

OUR COMPUTER IS GETTING OLD AND I DONT THINK IT WAS MADE UP OF GOOD COMPONENTS{3-4YRS}.
THE CD ROM DRIVE IS A 48IDE CD ROM DRIVE.

DO THESE PROBLEMS ADD UP TO A NEW CDROM DRIVE BEING BOUGHT.

ANY HELP WOULD BE MOST WELCOME AS MY SON IS DOING MY HEAD IN .

AS YOU CAN SEE MY KNOWLEDGE IS NOT MUCH ON COMPUTERS AND I CAN SEE IT IS EASY TO BE RIPPED OF IF YOU GET OUTSIDE HELP.

    STEVE.

    steve,

as a new 40-52X CDROM runs between $30-$50, I would replace. Sounds like the head is dirty/scratched/worn. If it is dirty, one of those $5 CD cleaners may do the trick. Iffin scratched/worn, sol.

A the posts above indicate, you probably need a new CD drive. Does your machine have the resourses for the games you bought? Most sytems 3 - 4 years old can't handle the newer games due to CPU and RAM requirements. Post your system specs and we can make suggestions as whether you should replace the sytem or upgrade.
