    USB printer problem. long

I have a Win 98SE machine with a HP USB printer. About a week ago I started getting errors in Spool32 (I think thats what it was). Until then everything had been fine (4 months). So I removed the printer and all software. When I tried re-installing, the computer never reconized(sp?) the USB device. I tried again several times with no luck. After this I removed the USB device in "Device Manager" and re-installed. No-Go.

What should I try now? Is this a prob. with my computer or the printer?

HPs answer to this, on their site, is that "You can always use a printer cable to connect to your PC". WTF, I don't think so! I paid for USB support on this printer.

    OK here goes:

HP XE734 computer ( I know! ****, but it is working great except this. Even with Win 2000) Celron 600, 64MB RAM, 15 Gig HD, HP CD-R plus.

Additonal software: Zone Alarm, SETI@Home, and Office 97 (Word only)

    HP Deskjet 640C

Everything is standard HP setup with the addition of no hardware. I "find" the new hardware with no problem under Windows 2000 and I previosly installed this printer in Win 98SE with no problem.

Update:I got the printer installed by useing a printer cable to get it to detect. Then I had to switch back to the USB cable to use it. Worked fine for a while then I got an error in Spool again. What do I need to do to fix the Spool thing??????

Start/Run type: MSInfo32, click ok. Tools/System File Checker. Click button: Scan for altered files. Click on settings tab. Click on button: Prompt for Backup. Make sure there is a check mark in both of these boxes: Check for changed files and Check for deleted files. Click OK. Now click Start in the System File Checker box. You will be able to see if any files have been changed or corrupted and choose to Restore them and back up the replaced files if you choose. Pay attention to files with the word spool in them because you may have a corrupted file.
