    Modem Problems

    I have a friends P233 that has a 33.6 ComStar modem.

When ever we try to get online it says that there is no dial tone. BUT....if we take the jack out of the modem and place it back in, it works fine.

Seems like when I place the jack in, it automatically picks up the line. Any suggestions??

Is there any setting that I should change to avoid this from happening.

Any suggestions are welcome, I'm reaching here.....thanks!!

    QTNM:

I have two modems on my office computer and I sometimes get the "no dial tone" message. I usually go to connection, diagnose modem by clicking on "more" info, then try modem again and it works. But that may be specific to my fax, Internet and telephony software. I'd try dumping the modem and reinstalling it, i.e., go to Device Manager, delete modem, reboot and reload driver. May work. Modems can be finicky.

    Good luck.

I would try the above suggestion but I believe your modem is bad. Its is not resetting. When you pull the cord it is like hanging up. I wouldnt be surpised if it wasnt holding the line also.

Modems are very cheap these days. i wouldnt sweat it.

In the modem properties screen go to the connections tab and then the advanced button and put ATZ in the extrra settings box and see if that fixes it. This is a command to reset the modem. If that doesn't do it reinstall the drivers, if that don't do it tanke the modem out, hook it to a set of jumper cables and the battery of your car.
Once modem is blackened like a good cajun sea bass tell your friend it is bad and show him the proof and go to the store and buy a new one.

I tried changing the phone cord, that didn't work.

I'll reinstall the modem and then try changing those settings.

Thanks for all your help, I'll let you guys know how everything goes...
