    trouble staying online

My friend PC has started loosing connection to the internet, almost every link click or every 2 to 3 minutes. Would you say it's most likely the modem going out? It is a 599LMR MB with on board modem. I've saw this a couple of times and a new modem corrected the problem. I need advice from you guys. Thanks.

Before you go out and buy a new modem, try dumping everything that is your connection and modem. You can find out how to do this on this page:

It definitely could by anything: something inside the computer (faulty modem, files, etc); could be a faulty telephone connection (in the house, the teleco, the telephone company); or it could be the ISP!

I use several free ISPs to connect to the internet. When it happens across the board, I assume it's not the ISP.

The telephone company does a lot of upgrading. I usually have this problem early in the AM, like aournd 3 AM.

Also, with 56K connections, it is approaching the limits of stablilty for data across the lines.

Check for line noise as well. Hit any digit on the phone and listen to the receiver. Hearing nothing is good. Static is bad.
The perfect Internet line has no other devices on it. Get some cat 5 network cable and run it directly to your exterior box for your Internet line. Do not exceed 32 feet in length for this line. Don't hook up the ground inside the house.
Telephone extension cords are a no, no.

    Cheers!
