IRQ conflict
Hello ladies and gents, it's been a while since I graced you with a problem!
I'm having what a believe to be an IRQ conflict, never dealt with em before. At startup, I get the old F1/Delete choice, with a conflict at I/O 2f0.
First of all, what info do we need to solve this, and I'll get her to you! Or just point me in the right direction towards self help!

Hi Apostle,
It seems that you have an IO address there. Are you sure that it was 2f0? Because I can't remeber one for that range. I do know that 1F0-1F7H is the range for the promary hard disk controller and 3F0-3F78h is the floppy disk. Could you make sure what it is?

Thanks, I'm in the middle of a dl now on a 28.8, I'll post exactly what it says as soon as I'm done!

here are couple of common I/O address ranges that will give you an idea where your problem is:
2e8-2ef is COM4 serial port
2f8-2ff is COM2 serial port
Most likely your COM2 and COM4 ports are assigned to the same Interupt Line 3.
hope it helps.

Ok, its: Conflict I/O Ports: 2F8
I guess that means its my com ports, but my modem is on Com1, I don't think I have anything on that port. How do I go about solving this?

here is a wrap up that might help you:
Avoid IRQ 2 and 9
Safe IRQs are 5, 10, 11, and 15(10,11,15 have higher priority than 5); I usually avoid all the others. You'll probably need to use these for: 1.your sound card (if it's an 8-bit card, then your only option is IRQ5). 2.A LAN card. 3.You SCSI host adapter(although some bus mastering SCSI host adapters - like Adaptech 2742 - can actually forgo interrupts, needing only a DMA channel).

go to run mode type dxdiag. It will start DirectX Dialog Tool. Go to the last tab 'More help' and click on MsInfo button.
There go to Hardware Resources and then I/O subfolder. Find your I/O address that you are having problems with and assign different address to it.

Hello Apostle,
What you can do is disable the COM2 (in case you don't use it, of course). Do this through the BIOS Setup. If you don't know how to do it let me now to provide detailed istructions. Also, you may need to change the IRQ/IO port of COM1, if it is using the 2F8 port.
Hope this helps.
PS. Of course what Ilya_S_K suggests may also work but I prefer the hardware way!

OK, I changed it, I messed around with both of em (com one and two). When I disable either one, I can't dial up.

Did you get rid of the error on a start up when you disabled COM2 port?
Try moving your modem to a different PCI slot.

Ilya is right. You can change the modem position. But, if you do this you will still need to reinstall the modem drivers (on Win98 this is done automatically; only a reboot is needed). So, I would suggest to leave your modem on its place for the moment.
First disable COM2. COM1 may stay if you feel that you may need it; if not, disable this one too. Then enter Windows and from the Device Manager (right click My Computer -> Properties) remove your modem. Then reboot and Windows will find it again for you. You may be asked for the modem drivers diskete and/or the Win98 CD. After the reboot all must be set correct.
Tell us how it's going.

Have ya tried booting to SAFE Mode and removing all traces of the modem and re-booting and see if Plug and Pray assigns the i/o's any better ?
Make sure P&P is enabled in BIOS TOO.
