Lightbulb Why does my computer whistle?

HP 8665c and the noise it makes is tolerable but I've been noticing this high pitched hum that's driving me crazy. Is it a fan or something? Thanks..

It's highly possible that it's a fan. The best way to find out is to open your case.
It could be your modem if it's not working properly.

How high? Like so high it's just barely audible? I have known a few power supplies that make a high pitched noise - quiet, but there. It's not from the fan - it's from the electronic components. Don't know if it's normal or not, but that's one possible, though improbable, source of the noise.

But yes, you might want to check the fans.

    Here's my guess:
The most likely cause of the whistle is the monitor. Shut it off, if the whistle disappears...I dont think I need to explain anymore.

Caused by components inside, usually coils vibrating at a harmonic of the horizontal scan frequency. Very tough to track down.
Give it a good slap, that may fix it, or reposition it somewhat.

LOL @ BFlurie, even funnier "give it a good slap", my Dad fixed the B+W TV many times using that method back in the 60's...

It could also be the the monitor, try turning off the monitor when you hear this high pitch sound.

A steady high pitch whistle is most likely the monitor or hard drive.

Seagate hard drives are famous for screaming, especially the SCSI ones ( Barracuda for sure )

Because it doesn't know the words.... Yuk yuk yuk hehe

    Couldn't resist...

Does it sound more mechanical or electrical? Is there anything that ever alters the pitch of the whistle? Maybe you could better narrow it down with the case open.

kingofpain, a bit of useless trivia for you. Muntz tv's back in the 50's & early 60's were made with distributed capacitance in mind. A slap or kick often fixed those! Wonder why they aren't around anymore? lol!

Haven't had the time to open it up but it seems to start after it's been running an hour or so. Now that I am noticing it, it's driving me nuts. It's like when someone is snapping gum or something and it annoys you so much, you tune out every other noise around you and focus on that one annoying sound.

PS - The very first thing I tried was giving it a whack :-)

PPS - To BBA that is a very good way to describe the noise - "screaming".

How long have you been using this case? 1 yrs? that probably why, the power supply fan is kinda worn out or too dirty.

Well, I just took the cover off and I'm 99% sure it's the hard drive like BBA said. My question is what do I do now? I bought this in May and have 3 years parts and labor (CompUSA bronze). Can I take it in and say my hard drive is noisy I want another if it's working okay? Will they tell me, sorry pal - can't help you, take a hike...Should I slide out the drive cage and give the hard drive itself a whack :-)?? Any suggestions appreciated. Also because of this I find myself hitting the standby button instead of just turning off the monitor like I usually do. Is that bad to do several times a day? Thanks guys....
