    Thumbs up Modem problems

I just built a new system and am having trouble with my modem . It installs ok on com3 but when its just finished dialing my net connection the pc freezes. it sounds like an irq problem but ive disabled usb and acpi and installed windows in a new directory with just the modem and video card in but it still happens. I have tried different pci slots but it only boots up in the one its in. Any one got any ideas ? Help appreciated.

do you have the newest drivers for thta modem? usually with the newer drivers it ids as a lucent winmodem rather than an lt winmodem...the newer driers makea huge difference with that modem...

have you checked your hardware devic manager yet? see if there is a question mark or X anywhere and you should start from there.

As others have said, make sure you have the latest drivers (both for the modem and the motherboard) and make sure you don't show any conflicts in device manager. You might also want to double check your IRQ assignments using a third party diagnostic program. (Windows has been known to report IRQ assignments and conflicts incorrectly from time to time).

If all that fails to help, you might just have a compatibility problem with the particular hardware combination you're using. (you may be able to get compatibility information from the modem or motherboard manufacturer)

Winmodems are pretty cheap - it might be easier to just buy a different brand than to keep pounding your head against the wall with the one you have.

the current version for an LT winmodem is 5.75.
click here to go to ZDNet's Updates.com and read about it and/or download it.

    hope this helps ya out.

for a modem that prices at $25 or so you cannot beat a lucent winmodem. I have used mine for over a year and never had a problem with it when i had up to date drivers. it connects at 53,300 almost all the time, i have had less than 3 disconnects, and my download speeds range from 2-12 k...i don't see any need to get a new modem until you sure ther are no resource conflicts and it still fails to work with the 5.75 drivers.
