Have you tried the I.E. repair tool?
Here is a link for an explaination if you need it.

You might want to try the Resource Wasters link on the same page. it also can be a source for lock ups.

it's the drivers for the banshee card had the same problem with my Maxi gamer banshee
#1) make sure in your bios that PCI/VGA Palette Snoop is Disabled
then make sure you have the latest bios for the banshee and the latest drivers
you might want to try the refrance banshee drivers from 3DFX
also check creatives help files for this problem

Thanks for all the replys I thought it might be the card banshee but wasnt sure. I need to try different drivers for it or get another card. Any suggestions on another vedio card?

the banchee is still not a bad card the newer driver's have full openGL support
so you can play all the games with it
Like I said up there ^ make sure that PCI\VGA paleltte snoop is set to disable in your mobo's bios
then make sure you have the newest bios for the banchee and the newest drivers from creative and or try the refrance drivers from 3DFX
the banchee's are not that much slower than the voodoo3 2000's and unless you have a P3 or athlon system your not really going to benefit much upgrading the video card to like a voodoo3 or tnt2.
hope that helps ya

I have the same problem on a Win95 laptop that I have. It freezes and requires a reboot to recover. I am sure that it is not the video and that it is tcpip related. It usually fails when I am ftp'ing a fairly large file although it may also lockup when I'm loading a web page. The only activity when I am ftping a file is the progress bar in the ftp window so I'm sure that it isn't video related. I don't know what the solution is but don't rule out tcpip or line interference etc.

I had the same problem for about 8 weeks on a K6 2 500 only when scrolling a big site the comp would lock. the only way out was to reboot. In my case the machine fixed its self. After the last reboot the machine came to windows imediatly without scanning the disk. I don't know what this means but I would doubt it has anything to do with vidio card or modem or any other hard ware.

Did you perform the I.E 5 Repair? If that doesn't work I would reinstall I.E.5.00 by using the setup.exe that you will find in your C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files. After that go get the newer version of I.E. 5.01 and Tools. Installing the new I.E.5.01 after re-installing 5.00 might avoid carry over corruptions. Do all the fixes and patches that are sononymous with I.E. version releases. The 5.5 will be released soon if you want to hang in. This would create a process of illimination for you on trouble shooting I.E. and your lockup problems.
