How do i overclock my 166mhz PC?
can i overclock my PC to increase the speed as my computer is fairly up 2 date in all aspects but speed....any other tips or tricks?
If it's an MMX and not on an Intel board, you may be able to overclock it. You would increase the front side bus frequency until it becomes unstable, then drop the fsb back or increase the voltage slightly.
If this is your only computer you should be sure you know what you are doing and be aware that increasing the bus frequency stresses everything. I personally wouldn't suggest it for an older machine unless it's also expendable.
I have a 166 non-mmx myself. It wouldn't overclock on a newer board but I have heard that the MMX's would due to better design tolerances.
If you have decided to go overclocking do it correctly and go for a processor upgrade. For less than $150.00 you get an upgrade chip, with or without cooling fan, some offer mmx functionallity and a biggie, a 3 or 5 year warrenty. Some of these babies can boost your system to 400mz. You might have to pull the cover to see if your cpu is soldered in, and if it is, does it have an upgrade socket. Again, your Dell manual should tell you..........good luck!
Yeah the only way would be to raise your bus speed. But I would go for one of those upgrade cpus so you don't stress your components until they are dead.
