ATA-66 drive on UDMA-33 controller?

Hi!

Just a quick question! If my motherboard only has a UDMA-33 controller, will I still be able to connect a new UDMA-66 drive(all new drives seems to be ATA-66)?

Yes it should work fine except at the lower UDMA33 speed .

Some drives, including the new 75GXP IBM I just got , have a utility which must be run to set the dma mode of the drive. I am not so sure that all ATA66 capable drives will operate correctly without the use of such a utility.

Yup Byrdon is right, it will only runn at DMA 33 speed.... the connection is limited to the slower devices top speed, in your case its the DMA controller, and not the ATA 66 drive.

well it might run fine but for some board will require to run the udma66 utility to disable the udma66 to make sure data transfer is fine...u can download from the drive manuf. site...hope helps

It should run fine. I recently put in a Seagate Barracuda ATA-66 (10.2 Gb) drive in one of my machines. It has an older Abit motherboard, that only supports UDMA-33. The drive runs fine at UDMA-33.

Yes, they should. My IBM 22GXP and WD ATA/UDMA-66 drives work fine at UDMA-33 on an Abit BX6-2 board.
