    Question ATX Powersupply Problem

    Hi!
I bougth a brand new computer P3/667 with 300W ATX power supply, Gigabyte 6CxC, enough RAM, 2 Harddisks, DVD Rom, 3D Grafic Card...
The 300W power supply, because Iīd like to change against a Asus V6800 DDR Geforce Card.

My Problem: after some hours surfing the web or watching DVD suddenly my system reboots itselfe (like you press the reset key).
Okay, I changed CPU, Motherboard, RAMīs+ Graficcard but I had still the same problem. I also installed WIN98 new and tryed as well WIN 2000. Especially when I run the automatic demo of Quake 3 Arena, my computer reboots after some minutes during watching the autodemo.

    I have a seccond computer P2/350... with a 250W ATX Powersupply.
When I changed the ATX powersupplies between the 2 computers, I brougt my problem to my "old" computer P2/350.

O.K. I thought the fault occures by the 300W Powersupply.

I changed this 300W PSU against a new one from my dealer, but I had still the same problem.

I bought a brandnew 400W Leadman ATX PSU Type LP6100D
and... MY PROBLEM IS STILL THE SAME.

Unexpected reboots on both systems with all 300 and 400W ATX PSUīs and a very fine working system with my old 250W PSU.

Can someone help me to solve my *** problem?

    Kind regards ONU

You ahve already eliminated every thing. So you are left with the fact that the only thing different detween a 250W psu and a 300W psu is the omount of heat they produce. What is the ambient temperatur. can it be cooled. Try another fan.

    Regards Tom

ps. Yes a few ** wouldent come amiss

Have you OC'ed this system? If so try reducing your settings back to original and see what happens.

It sounds to me like you have a HEAT problem with the CPU.. if you can't cool the cpu off enough, it won't matter how many case fans you have. What kind of heatsink and fan is on there? Is the fan blowing toward the cpu or away? Try towards. Makes my cpu run about 5c cooler. Next, make sure that there is thermal grease between the heatsink and cpu.
Many times the factory does a crummy job of doing this. I use AMD chips, so I am not sure how your p3 fan exactly is connected, so maybe if you need help, someone can give better directions for you on that. But your problem definitely sounds heat related. I wonder if your core voltage is set too high? I had a p133 that the factory had things set up for a 166 on accident. So they can set things wrong sometimes.
Have you tried talking to the store you bought it from? If you don't want to tinker with things, the store should fix your problem. Good Luck, I know it sure can be frustrating when things aren't working right. (And then there's us overclockers who can't wait to tweak it till its barely alive.. LOL)

    Question

    Hey Drojman,

thankīs a lot for your explenations!
I donīt belive on a thermal problem because the problem occurs only on that PC, Iīm using my new PSU with 400W.
The CPU tempature of the P3/667 is at around 35 Degrees Celsius.
I have a original Intel CPU boxed with head sink.
The same problem occures, if I use the 400 W PSU in my other PC with P2/350 original Intel with boxed head sink.

I see no other reason for my fault then the PSU, because the computer using my old 250W PSU works without problems.

I see only two differences between the 2 PSUīs:
the technical date of my good workingATX 250W PSU are:
    -5V/0,5A
    -12V/1A

    and the 400W PSU has:
    -5V/0,3A
    -12/0,5A

Maybe the less current for the negative voltages are the reason for my unmotivated reboots?
My motherbords are gigabyte GA-6CXC and GA 6 BXC.

    best regards ONU

    Thumbs up

5 volts at 3 amps is well enough that's for sure. It could be that some voltages from your supplies are dropping or going above what your board can handle. I noticed how mine do change after I downloaded this little monitoring program. It even has alarms for when voltages and temps go beyond a certain range (which you can set). Check it out. http://members.brabant.chello.nl/~a.vankaam/mbm/
