No Network Neighborhood?!?!

My friends computer is having a problem. He recently bought a new hard drive, but for some reason after he reinstalled Win98se he does not have a network neighborhood icon on the desktop, and thereby cannot browse the LAN at our school. can anybody help us with this situation?

Check to see if the network card is installed properly in the Device Manager. If you don't have a network card properly configured, your computer can't see the network. If it's installed OK, check your network settings in Control Panel. Make sure the card is bound to the protocols you need.

Do you got tweakui?? I think its on the disk install in and go to it in the control panel
click the tweakui icon then go to desktop section put a check by network neighbor it will say you need to log out before it will appear then it should appear.

Go into the network section of the control panel and check to see if client for Microsoft Networks is installed. (or any client for that matter.) If there is no client in there I would try putting in Client for Ms Networks and then after the reboot you will see the Network Neighborhood Icon will have returned.

was the NIC card installed before you
put Windows in the New hard Drive ?
Some like my 3Com wants Windows loaded first
then install the NIC Card.
also Like mine if you have the
NIC card next to a AGP video card it
don't like that either

I'd advise staying away from Tweakui, or, at the very least, uninstalling it immediately after making any repairs as there are dozens of bugs and it can cause your control panel applets to corrupt the more you tinker with it.......

Otherwise, I'd say that you may need to reinstall the network components off the 98 CD. Also check out if the reinstall corrupted the NIC driver - especially if is a 3com 3C905 series - they get real "twitchy" if you try to use the 3com 3C90X generic driver set on them.....

Provide more info if problem persists.

Also - try to map a network drive to a known location through explorer - may just be a bad network neighborhood applet, but no other damage.
