    question about video artifact

My work computer is legacy XP machine I built in 2008 (see sig). My original video card (AGPx8) finally bit the dust. I plan to build a new system this summer as time allows, so rather than buy yet another legacy video card, I installed another AGP video card I happened to have on-hand.

Although the Radeon 9600SE is significantly less powerful than my failed GeForce 7600 GS, I'm mostly satisfied with the performance, except for one particular artifact... When I open menus from within Windows (right-click on desktop or open any menu in Windows Explorer, Notepad, Device Mgr, etc), the menu is mostly blacked out except for a small square in upper left corner. Sweeping my cursor over the menu reveals the remaining portion. A bit of a hassle.

I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to remedy this short of buying yet another legacy card until I build my new system? Unfortunately, I'm unfamiliar with the various settings that affect video card ops.

Interestingly, this problem doesn't affect applications like MS Office, Firefox, Thunderbird, or even graphics intense programs like CorelDraw, so I don't think this is necessarily the result of a less powerful video card. I installed latest drivers (2010).

Did you uninstall the GeForce drivers?
The drivers from the old card will cause weird problems like that, going either way.

May end up having to use Display Driver Uninstaller

Try using the old Classic Start menu from windows 98 days. Right-click the Taskbar, select Properties, click the Start Menu tab, select the Classic Start menu, click Apply, click OK.

Thanks for the replies. I already had classic start menu set. I didn't uninstall GeForce drivers because I thought I might try to find another 7600GS. But I decided against that, so I did try the uninstall. No cigar. After reading the thread Train posted, I decided against installing Display Driver Uninstaller. Looks a bit risky.

Since my OP, I discovered that re-booting solves the problem, although it eventually comes back. I'm in the habit of not rebooting for days at a time, instead I let it drop into standby, which pretty much zeros out power consumption. If shutting down every night solves this problem, I'm fine with that for now.
