Chdsk on external esata-drive also used as boot-drive HDD

I am using a second boot-drive HDD on my winxp also as external system-partition-backup-location. its an esata with firewire and usb also.

when with trueimage trying to save systempartition 70gb it says writing error. and also telling me chdsk must be made.
Should i attach that drive as boot-drive and doing chdsk then. How? in save mode? would that work.
Should i do to dos-mode and act from there. do i have to know first the related drive-letter.
systempartition-save-location(drive-letter) has different letter when comparing inside trueimage with normal use.
I have a full version of Trueimage recognizing also Seagate together with WD-drive. limited free version would allow the latter too.
If both NON-WD-drives: Full version needed.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NB: Important note for those doing the same. This must be the procedure:
    1. first-boot-drive(cd/dvd-drive) must set in cmos first.
    2. PC must be shut down then after that, starting from NIL. otherwise drive will not show up.
    3. maybe one must start up pc first with external drive activated.
    4. maybe cd must be inserted only during second fresh start we will see next time.

What about defragging systempartition-backup? i remember that this had never been advised. and how about sector by sector-backup?
Destination must then be absolutely in one piece? will see what i can delete.
last time when i had these problems i copied backup from original drive(saved in seperate partition obviously) to external drive not using trueimage then.

Check disk is SLOW and the bigger the disk the longer it takes. This is machine level and that is darn slow.

Is it related to total size 2tb or partition-size which is not that big around 200mb?
i will leave it alone on the actual drive. its at 46% some more hours waiting. then later second partition. one of them was too small. old problem. and only one quick sata-slot, second for external drive. so systemdrive limited to 2TB. no data-drive.

Interrupted scan on partition x since firefox and desktop was freezed. must do a FF reset.
    x = 876 free of 1.14 TB.
chdsk running now on partition y which is much smaller.
