    Hard drive enclosure

Will I be able to reformat a Linux hard drive without using Linux commands using Windows using this enclosure?
Can I assume that usb 3 is backward compatible to usb 1 or 2?
My problem is a used lenovo laptop that had Win 7 on it. It would not let me reformat so I tried a linux disk to format which did not work. I changed the bootup in the bios to the cd but it doesnt show up.
    Thanks for any help!

Should be no problem to format with windows, I did with win 7 and now do it with Win 10.
Fact is Windows wil prompt you to format it.
Gparted live USB and CD I have and use the heck out of them.

Then of coarse I use live USB AntiX-16 stick and Gpart is part of it.

Just remember most computers use F12, MSI motherboards uses F11, to pull up the one time boot menu so you can select what to boot from. But some of the newer laptops with UEFI BIOS can be darn hard to get to boot USB stick and cd/dvds.

Well the enclosure did not work. Win 7 picked up the drive but could not access the files. My Xp couldnt pick up the drive. My Linux system picked it up and showed the files but I couldnt format or delete the files because of permissions. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
    Thanks!!

If you're going to format the drive, why do you need to access files?

Did you go into Disk Management, drop the partition and create a new one?

If that still doesn't work, you could try GParted like Train suggested or MiniTool Partition Manager:

I dont. I just verified they were there in my Linux system.
I used the win7 disk management. It would not let me format. It did let me delete the volume.
Damm Thinkpad wont let me access my Win 7 disk. I just wanted to use the Win7 Thinkpad for 3d printing.
Ill just go ahead and find another drive for it.

I hate dealing with proprietary systems. I only have the Thinkpad and my wifes gateway laptop. My 2 desktops Linux/Xp dual boot and Win7 are my own systems and work well even though their getting old like me.
    Thanks Guys!
