    System upgrade

This is a summary of my machine:

    NVIDIA GeForce 6200
    WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0 250Gig
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3
    775Dual-VSTA MB
    Processor x86 Pentuim 4 3.415 Mhz
    Ram 2,560.00 MB

I need to upgrade for photo editing. Right now it won’t play mp4 videos at normal speed. I have to slow the playback down. I have Windows7 but I don’t use it because of the performance.

I am wondering if I can upgrade the processor by how much and what the best video card would be under a $100.00.

Or am I looking at a new system? I would like to keep a new system under $400.00.

P4s leave a lot to be desired. You want dual core i3 minimum or the equivalent in AMD for a cpu.

USB 3 or 3.1 is very, very desirable also.

    Video card possible help

Thanks for the info Train. An i3 or an i5 won't fit my motherboard will it?

Nah - that socket is strictly Core 2 Duo.

Mine is 6 years old and it's an E8400. Still quite viable though.

Anyway, you're looking at a complete system upgrade unless you can figure out why your MP4s are playing fast. I would suspect that it's more of a function of OS than hardware. Which player do you use? Have you tried VLC?

From a 950 to a E6700, per that list and 4 GB of ram should be a positive help.

What do you use to clean out the temp files?

I use TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer

7.6 Gb is the most I hve cleaned out and it reaally helped the rig by doing so.

At that price, I suppose it's worth a try. Mind the seller feedback.

    Update that BIOS!

Thanks for the info fellows. I really appreciate it. Its what I was looking for. I am going to go with the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 used from Amazon for $39.00. I have an account there. And also Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX. Asrock says it is supported. I use Ccleaner to clean temp files. Auslogic registry cleaner.

    Thanks again

I find Auslogic a bit too aggressive (besides, they love PUP software it seems). Ccleaner does fine with registry stuff.

Don't forget to update your BIOS. That may actually help right off.

Train is quite right about the RAM. 2GB is "ok" for 32bit Windows, but 4GB is much better. Double again for Win64.

    I ran into something today:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_P...on_Event_Timer

Be sure that yours is enabled in BIOS setup.
