    Windows Update Failure

Last October, I replaced my husband's computer. Beginning in November, practically every time Windows Update runs, the updates fail. A few get through, but most of them fail for reasons I have not been able to ascertain. In January, it took me 3 weeks to finally get the updates from November and December to install. I installed them one at a time, after trying all sorts of diagnostics, by downloading each one from Microsoft. It was a long, frustrating business.

Fast forward to March, and it is happening again. It will get as far as 92% or even, once, 99%, before we get the message "Windows couldn't complete the updates Undoing Changes Please do not turn off your computer."

I have attempted to go into Windows Update and select only one update to install. That doesn't work. Windows will attempt to install ALL the updates anyway.

His computer is a Dell Inspirion 3646 running Windows 8.1 with Bing; Intel Celeron CPU J1800 2.41 GHz; 4.0 GB RAM, 64-bit.

I will probably be able to install each update via brute force again, but I should not have to do it this way at all. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

    Thanks.

Are you getting any specific error codes? Did you check the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log for errors?

Did you try running the Windows Update Troubleshooter?
    http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262

You can also try the steps here:

    Thank you for your reply.

I have tried the steps listed on thewindowsclub.com without any success. I also have tried the Windows Update Troubleshooter without any success.

The Windows Update Error Log shows errors 0x80070032 and 0x800f0922. I have attempted to discover what those mean, but a search on the Windows support site does not return anything.

Thank you again for your reply.

    Hmm. I found this:

So you might want to try disabling UEFI secure boot in the BIOS.

Thank you for your reply. I have copied his Windows Update log to a flash drive and am examining it on my computer. So far, I have found several items which I think might be pertinent, and I am going to attempt to research their significance. For what it is worth, this time, when I attempt to search for and download each update separately, microsoft.com does not show any results for the search. Even though the updates show in the update history as failed updates, even though when I search for updates on Windows Update through the Control Panel, they do not show up on Microsoft's sight.

If anyone is willing to examine the update log, I can upload it. But I will not unless asked to. I have not yet gone into his BIOS.

Thank you again for your assistance.

I keep finding the same statements repeated in the Windows Update Log.

Is this the site from where are you downloading the updates? You'd just need to put in the KB#######
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/default.aspx

Could you list the ones you are trying to download?

Well, I already mentioned the UEFI secure boot. So you can try that, if you haven't already.

If you go to the link I posted and put in KB with the number, you should be able to find the downloads. I normally script my updates anyway.

This is the first link that comes up when I search "0x80070002 windows update", but it basically says the same thing as the Windowsclub link. Troubleshooter, etc.
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/910336

I would at least try disabling UEFI secure boot. You can always re-enable it later.

Your list contains optional updates, not just security updates. Normally, I only do security updates.

Thank you for your reply. I will try that the next time I have access to his computer and a couple or so hours in which to work.

And I have not yet ruled out disabling UEFI. I just not had the opportunity to attempt it yet.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Update. I went into the settings and changed how Windows installed the updates from automatically to letting me choose when and which ones to install. Then I only installed the recent security updates. Everything went smoothly. At a later point, I will attempt, one by one, to install the remaining updates to see what happens.

If the one by one updates fail, I will try disabling UEFI to see what happens.

Thank you again for your assistance. It has been invaluable.

Good to hear. Like I said, I only install security updates. If you have a specific problem/reason, then maybe install the optional updates.
