turning on says launch setup repair

Let me start with this laptop I'm having problems with is a CQ61 COMPAQ--all it does when I turn it on says---launch startup repair-I click on enter for it to do that and it turns pink in color and returns to same thing-launch setup repair-any suggestions as to whats wrong with it. tried to send pic but keeps disappearing.

You can restore it bac to factory, but you will lose everything on the hdd.

But first, do you have access to another computer? If yes, you can remove the hdd and usin a USB adaptor or mounting it into another computer and save what you would hate to lose.

i restart click on f11 to reset-it says starting windows-starts up and goes back to red screen saying launch startup repair-any more ideas-

Unless you can find the hhds makers diagnostic tool, you can use the Seagate for DOS on here

Run the short test and if not errors, run the long.
Take notes on any HDD errors.

Any errors in the momtest Means there is a problem. If you have more than one stick, test individually until you find the bad stick.
