Partition table problems on external drive-winxp
on one of my two winxp-drives 2tb where i have overlapping partitions/partition tables C and D new things are messed up.
1. I was using dockingstation orico 6518 series(Usb 3.0-I only have usb 2.0- and esata) for cloning -see here:
http://www.sysopt.com/showthread.php...83#post1503483
but i forgot to used esata. it was very slow.
During procedure to switch my external drive to esata(forgot how its done)-no data could be seen after moment on when going out of usb 3.0-i gave it up and attached on "second" channel(at least i thought) but it was first SATA-channel and then chdsk(or is that autochk?) run during startup. it took almost 2 hrs for 1 TB. afterwards it said defective drive.
Then i ran chkdsk P: /f /r (p= drive) in commandline inside winxp. but no errors on clean drive not the one where i messed it up. should i run from there?
I have no backup!
How can i save this drive?
-
chkdsk is a dos type program and that means it is slow.
When I goof like that, I just start over from scratch.
-
How can i start a selfhealing-process? i did it in my good 500gb-winxp-system. should i run chksk P: /f without /r in the drive which caused the problem? as usb-drive? or attached on second channel?
wiht mybook-external enclosure i had to install drive first as usb then esata. must digout orico-instructions(docking-station which was involved). but beforehand partition table must be healed. maybe show partinfo.

testdisk running
Ran testdisk for the external usb 2.0 drive on a ok-500gb winxp-system.
Structure ok, but there are mismatches with sectors. i have a log-file.
it says cannot be recovered. i dont want to recover data.
found a backup of partition table?
should i run that trough too? what must be done further? i dont understand testdisk.

Instructions found
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Schri...llungsbeispiel
These are the german instructions and very clear to go through. Hopefully i am succesful on my round birthday...would be the best present recovering data of non-backed-up drive....
-
Very near to solve- testdisk heals
with testdisk i can solve the problem with deleted/hidden partition.
As in the instructions i have found two versions: both marked as D=deleted.
Then i checked them. The one with no data i must leave alone, marked D.
Then go to version with data inside. left/right-arrow to highlight then decide whether Primary or Logical or Extended(if i dont err).
Which one?
update:
http://superuser.com/questions/37430...usb-hard-drive
already found out: PRIMARY only ONE partition
Then write at the end to recover partition table.
since the instructions are for a booting-disk the situation seems different.

Writing partition table did not work inside windows
Writing partition table did not work when running testdisk in windows.
with hirens-boot-disk did not work at all the same way.
will now try from usb-stick. or retry inside windows xp.
-
Writing partition table did not work when external drive is attached as usb2.0. Will now attach as second drive.
I could also try to set as extended instead of primary. then retrying as usb2.0

If it was mine, I would remove all partitions and reformat the drive from windows. Yes, wave bye bye to the data on the drive.
A guess, but remove a empty or backed up partition overlapping the not backed up one.

Testdisk-Forum is helping-will come back with results
I am currently in testdisk-forum where i get help from the author grenier.
i now have more new drives for backups.
the problem is: testdisk-documentation is not precise enough for newbies who do not understand the mechanisme.
PLS wait until i am back again.

I am trying to register in Terabytesunlimited-forum(see other thread about the problem) toget answers about testdisk-alternative "BootIt Bare Metal.
will first clone my external 1TB-drive.

BootItBM and Testdisk to solved messed up partition table
I have two drives with these problems.
a) bootdrive with overlappping partions
b) external drive with showing as RAW, no data-access.
b) i have go different instructions by both authors. could be my fault because i mentioned both drives and showed results of the findings.
here are testdisk-instructions:
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step
I understand except
NTFS Boot sector recovery
does my external drive also need this recovery? does it normally have NTFS Boot sector?
it was normally set, no special GPT(if i dont err) where no boot-option is possible. BooItBM has the options to decide which is used.

Bootguard must be disabled
Found a possible reason why I could not write.
Bootguard(in cmos/setup) was enabled.
could it also be when AHCI is enabled or other virus-protections?
maybe better switching pc and disable all protections.
