autochk not found-winxp

during startup of winxp it says "autochk not found...
autochk IS in system32.
i googled but could not repair with my winxp-bootdisk. maybe wrong commands.
but here i found something:

when trying to repair/installation-repair all three winxp-cds do not show my systempartion.
i think i had this before(not autochk but the latter.... must just dig it out. dont remember in which context. partition manager would tell.
Maybe this occured when i had Speedfan-problems(now solved, will update the thread) and i shut down pc when freezed. This could have to do with overheated cpu, gpu. around 50°C. have new processor but cannot mount new cooler since baseplate must be bought. maybe better temporarily switching back to slower cpu.

replacing autochk after having solved the mentioned problem with partition. i think systempartion is not active anymore.
Someone is telling one must rename autochk.exe then system will replace it. or one should replace it. i did from cd but it did not help.

Really PM found this:
pm had found ext. partition on disk 1 that crossees 1024-cylinder boundary and is not marked as an extended partition. PM could solve that but still the autochk-warning coming at start.

must be remaining space(2gb) which i couldnt merge. will check later this evening.

How about attaching the "bad" drive to a second drive(not duplicate) of the same PC? chkdsk will work then and probably repair.
with this procedure i could revive a none-booting drive. worked also when attached to a second pc with same OS.
maybe better making a backup. btw: Why backup sector by sector? if not with that procedure what could happen?

That looks more like the command you would use to copy the "autochk.exe" file from the "\i386" directory on an original Microsoft Windows XP CD to the "%windir%\System32" directory on a hard drive. However, before it would work, that "a:" would have to be changed to the drive letter of the optical drive containing the original Windows XP CD, --and-- that space between the ":" and the "\" would have to be eliminated. For example, if your CD/DVD drive was assigned drive letter D:, the correct command would be:

copy d:\i386\autochk.exe %windir%\System32

Note that some installations of Windows XP contain the \i386 on the C: drive ... which would make it even easier:

copy c:\i386\autochk.exe %windir%\System32

(No Windows XP CD needed).

Yes, you can attach a "bad" hard drive as another drive in a Desktop PC running the same version of Windows and then run CHKDSK against that drive. Recommend running the manufacturer's hard drive diagnostic utility first. And if you see FAIL, attempting a CHKDSK would probably make matters even worse. (CHKDSK cannot fix a failing hard drive).
