Wrong Partition active-Partition Magic to solve that-winxp
In an other thread i informed about boot.ini alarming to be defective. But system is starting.
Examining wiht partition magic showed that wrong partition is active.
To solve this i tried to change the "right" partition first from primary to logical but its too small(9gb space free only)
Situation:
I(should be C):Primary 9gb free-34gb in total
Unallocated 2GB Primary
extended Partition
D(D): Logical
C(should be E) Active Primary
I tried to resize D(make it smaller) said there is 2gb infront. yes i could have reduve size from the other end.
But i wanted to merge these 2gb with first small 34gb partition.
But its said these 2gb will be implemented as folder. I do not what it as folder.
Can this be avoided? Or is this commen. Why this? Winxp-Thanks

first steps to solve the problems:
To merge that unallocated space (2gb) with c: should i first create a partition and format it before merging. how about ntfs? can it be formatted ntfs? does that matter?

I have found a lot about this theme-mine is more complicated with the wrongly active set partition. They are all not thought to the end or other software/OS used.
none is with my wrongly set partition.
It see i must first understand partitions/volumes/ext. partition and primary partitions. yes i have found th resp. informations.

PM will keep you on your toes.
I had to pay darn good attention to what I was doing.

I am still wondering how this could happen, setting wrong partition active. Maybe it was really the first time using PM to prepare my newest 2gb-drive.
computer management is showing the "right" partition-letters but PM sees the truth (C(I), D(D) and E(C) wrongly active partition. inbetween C and D 2gb unallocated space.
This mistake cannot be done when repairing MBR, right? I tried some tools from hirens-boot-cd.
At least it is booting and windows xp working properly.

I will leave it alone.
1. trying to merge unallocated, later created and formatted 2gb-space with first partition not possible: source is ntfs version 3.0. the other one 3.1.
2. when trying to resize the largest partition to add space to c: procedure was standing still.

SOLVED
I gave the problems another trial.
1. changed the active partition. when doing that the wrong active partition will be hidden. must be unhidden.
2. could merge unallocated space. there will be an empty folder visible which can be deleted.
3. remains resizing(enlarging systempartition). reduced partition is on extended partition, logical one.
untouched partition is also primary. The one whihc was active.
can i change it as logical?
i dont understand why it should be primary. Maybe that was he problem when i accidentally have set it active. Logical one cannot be set active, right?
Would it be wise to use defraggler(defragmenter) before resizing? Thank you very much

I have set logical to primary many a time.
-
I will not enlarge systempartition. remaining 11gbs are enough.
Can i change primary partition on extended partition to logical. Advantage?
