Dell Inspiron Laptop will not boot

Old Dell Inspiron 600m Laptop suddenly will not boot. No new hardware or software recently installed. Computer has always been slow, but usable.
Tried pressing F8, as (dreaded) blue screen advised, but nothing happened. Cannot start in safe mode. Please advise. Thanks so much.

Plug in the AC after removing the battery and see if it will boot.

A lot of the older laptops will not boot if the battery is bad. Some times, they will boot up without the battery. Note i said sometimes.

Does it do anything when you press the power button? Any error messages?

Yes, Dell screen comes on, then Windows XP (!), the a blue screen. I will try right now, and send you the error msg on the blue screen.

Press power button: error message (paraphrased):
"Problem has occurred, Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
    ***STOP: 0x000000ED, (0x8A6F5900, 0xC0000015, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

Those steps should work on your Dell.
