how to replace CMOS battery without loss of settings
My CMOS battery is still holding, but I thought I'd go ahead an replace to be safe. Is there a way to backup up CMOS settings? Or what about hot-swapping the battery? I'm worried that when I remove the battery, I'll lose the settings. I've made changes over the years (which I can't recall now) and I don't want to have to write everything down.

You'll have to write everything down... while you have the chance.

As SRJ stated, take notes on the setting you have and expect to have to reset them. Although once in a GREAT while, while swapping the battery, we luck out and do not have to re-enter all the changes. Note: I said 'once in a GREAT while"

Not the answer I was hoping for, but at least I know what to expect.

The battery in my Dell at home is probably 7 years old... Most will last at least five years.

Yeah, mine's going on six now. Which is why I need to take care of this sooner than later.
