eSATA external drive or not? old Motherboards
We have here older MBs with two SATA-channels only.
1.Quick Data-backup(huge data)
a) using a second drive on slot 2.
b) using eSATA via 3SATA-adapter externally
If the old MB is slow then a) and b) will always have the same speed, right?
c) We can then eigher use a dockstation or external esata-case, right?
I have found these informations about esata versus usb3.

thanks a lot

If a older slower mobo, then yes the speeds will be real close together.
I have found that USB 3 external drives to be much slower than eSATA.
I am using a MSI 990XA-GD55 motherboard with a AMD 8150 cpu plus 8 GB of ram.

PCI-Controller-Card-SATA-IDE-eSata
How about a PCI-Controller-Card with 2x SATA, 1x IDE and 1x e-SATA?
a) i can add more hdds internally
b) can connect them externally at the 3-SATA-port, right?
c) How about speed compared with the above mentioned solutions?
keep in mind, pc is old-GA-7n400 pro2- AMD- xp-processor, 4gb ram

The speed whould be that of the PCI channel it was plugged into. Still faster than USB.

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/pro...px?pid=1756#ov
Try this for info. it says it is sata 1 which is 1.5 gb out put on mb so if you plug a sata 11 3.gb hard drive to the mb or a external esata plugin to mb it will still run at 1.5gb.
Been wounding my self if a sata 111 pci will work on a sata 11 mb.

1.5 gb
The card i have in mind is 1.5 gb only anyway.

VIA VT6421-Serial-RAID PCI-Controller
2x Port SATA (intern)+ 1x IDE PCI Karte (intern)+ 1x eSATA
RAID-Funktion für IDE und S-ATA
RAID evel 0 , Level 1 und JBOD
unterstützt 32 bit Festplatten-Mode >147 GB
unterstützt zwei unabhängige Serial ATA-Ports

But what i dont understand is this.
2x sata internally, 1x ide 1x esata outside.
my board has only two sata-slots. so i can only use the second one.
but anyway if i had 3 slots, how will it work with only one string outside(esata)? will my external drive show both internal two hhds 2 and 3?
---
regarding ide:
i have ide-raid-experience but i will not make it more complicated like in my w2k-times.
I only need better-quicker backup-functions outside.dont want to spend multiple hours for ghost-systembackups on usb or dvd-burning.

The picture shows me that it has one IDE connector, good for 2 ide devices.
2 internal SATA connectors
And one External eSATA connector.
Don't forget you have to be able to power the hdd too.
-
Still do not understand how its working
assuming i have two sata internally attached. What does the only esata external drive see?will there be a menue in the drive showing both?

eSata will show up in my computer and if it is messed up someway go into computer management and pick it up. Anyway what I did to format mine.

Why a PCI-Card if there is another solution?
For me who has only one sata-slot left(two in total) there is a simpler method by using a sata-esata-cable-combo. the one i have in mind has two cables. Maybe in case of emergency i could use the ide-connector with adapter internally to have access externally to a second inernal SATA-drive. in cmos-setup SCSI must be set if ide-drive is active and bootable-a systemdrive.
Since my pc is totally open drive-access was not that hard.

If it works, you are good to go.

I am coming back since i could get an external WD My Book Home usb 2.0, Firewire 400, eSATA-drive.
I have a MyBook Essentional with usb 2.0/3.0. Only one connector, cable is identical for usb2 or 3, right? Since my MB has only usb2 and is slow usb2 is good enough but not good enough if i could use esata. see discussion above.
This new esata-drive could be THE ultimate solution for me right? I would only need the esata-cable from inside out and not a card. Would such a card alter the amount of SATA-and IDE-slots? I have only two of each beside the raids. SATAs are only used for HDDs, no opticals yet. Right now i am using an ide-hdd, so both SATAs are free. Thanks für your advice.

With the right length of eSata/SATA cable, you should be just fine.
I USB cable that came with the drive could well be different than the normal USB cable. The one on my 3 TB Go Flex is.
-
1. the card is in any case independent from the internal SATA-connectors, right?
2. when i want quick backups from my external usb-drive(mybook essential) i would use a dockstation connected to eighter
a) simple sata-esata-cable using the second channel(or first if its free)
or
b) connector on the sata-card.
Its high time getting a 5gb/sec MB!

I would be real happy with 100 MB/sec with that setup. As I only get 124 with this rig.
