Trojan.hbo has left me with no internet connection

Hi all...it has been a long time since my last post here but, I need some assistance please. My fathers laptop got infected (Windows XP) with trojan.hbo, it corrupted the malwarebytes definitions database and messed with internet connection.

I downloaded a standalone version of malwarebytes and ran it, it found and deleted the virus all ok. I have run it several times and is now clear. The problem is that my browswers still cant get onto the net.

Windows updates all come down ok so I know the connection is working.

I have tried disabling the antivirus and running combofix and it did not help.

Has anyone got any ideas please ?

I also forgot to mention I disabled the antivirus and firewall and ran combofix and I have a log but, it did not resolve the issue.
