Only IDE-port defective-using SATA for optical drive

Friend of mine has an IDE-channel most probably defective. DVD-drive does not work. OS is on SATA.
Beside this also some letters on keyboard(left side) cannot be used.
    ---

I have an ide-sata-adapter and tried to use an optical and IDE-drive on SATA-channel with no luck. Nothing can be seen nor is detected.
    Maybe wrong jumpering.

Should my two optical drives on ide 1(2) be removed for this test?

    IDE-RAID
I know how to add multiple different drives(optical, ide, sata) by using ATA-IDE-Raid-technique.
    Thanks a lot

Check the BIOS, I have found where you have to enable the IDE contollers on a number of mobo.

    ide-controllers always enabled.
i have read that certain adapters have problems with atapi. google did not help.
will tell my friend to get sata-optical drive. they are cheap.

He has also the problem that certain buttons on left side of usb- keyboard do not work. the same when replaced.

Remove the KB driver in Device manager and reboot.
    Should take care of that.

Maybe i have also a defective ide-controller. bad or no access with ide-optical-drive on p3. Will replace drive first.

maybe newer drives are not compatible.

KB in this case means Key board driver.
Bad ribbon is a possibility too.
I have hit a bunch of them over the years.!

The ide drivers would be worth a try. Although it is not often they get corrupted. But it has happened.

Could solve the problem on my p3.
    optical drive was defective.

    B
    USB-problem partly solved

    1. could attach normal usb-data-stick by loading one of the two usb-files needed. thanks usbman-bipolarbill,right?
the second needed usbmphlp.pdr-file i couldnt find or i could leave

    2. for usb-modem i can see drive but program does not want to be loaded. once it asked to be formatted.
Maybe it cannot be activated with winme on my p3.
its quite quick when its running-compared to my p4s......
I was about to kick this p3 out since it was blocked! But suddenly it was running good after rebooting.
i will only use internet via network-cable. For emergency reasons only.

WinMe needs a driver for each USB item. Just like 98 did.
