Want a better program? Search Everything is what several of us use.

Even though we have not heard much about Google Desktop security issues since 2006, if you are using the "Search Across Computers" feature your data will be stored on some remote server and will be available to anyone who could hack your Google password. It will also be subject to subpoena.
I don't use it because it is a bit of a resource hog, is intrusive and generally very annoying. I am sure it can be configured to be better, but I prefer to use Copernic Desktop Search, which unlike "Search Everything" and "Locate32" (the other desktop search app that I employ), it searches file content, so I can find a given word in a PDF or any other text document. I prefer the two former apps for searching file names. They all index, so give immediate results. With Copernic I keep Google for default internet search and disable all toolbars. I prefer apps to speak only when spoken to.

Well I'll add another one to the mix, FileSearchEX ... love it, so simple to use.
