Mapping a network drive
I am trying to support an animal charity's office network which consists of a Netgear router, an 8 port Netgear switch and 6 PCs one of which is the server. I have had to change one of the PCs and have attempted to map the replacement to the server. From the other PCs I can see the N: drive but not from the replacement PC.
I can access files and folders on the server but not the N: drive. Has changing the PC upset the Netgear switch and should I try rebooting the whole system?
I will probably be asking more stupid questions but as I am all this charity has got I trust you will be patient.
Many thanks.

I can access files and folders on the server but not the N: drive.
So you can access the network path from the new PC?
\\servername\sharename
So the new PC has the same workgroup\username\password combination as the old system?

Mapping a Network Drive
Hello Midknyte.
I should have mentioned the PCs are running XP Pro and XP Home. The new PC is running Home.
Yes, I can access \\server\folder but the staff are used to seeing the N: drive which doesn't show on the new PC.
Yes, I am using the same workgroup.
Many thanks for your reply.

Just as long as your "server" machine is not XP Home. XP Home is limited to 5 simultaneous clients.
If you can get to the UNC path, then you should be able to map the drive.
net use N: \\servername\sharename

I'm pretty sure the server is XP Pro but I am working in the offices tomorrow and will check it out. I will let you know how I get on.

I can confirm that the server is XP Pro. I can connect to //server/shared folders with the new PC but not to the N: drive as with the other PCs on the network. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Did you run the net use command like I posted? make sure to use \ and not /
If not, how are you trying to map the drive?
