    Where can I get FIXSWEN.INF

I am trying to clean a pest but can not launch any .exe programs. I had this problem a long time ago and fixed it using fixswen.inf which I got from a McAfee page that is no longer available.

Does anyone know where I can find fixswen.inf or it's replacement?

    Thanks ...g

Spent three seconds to find this:
    http://home.mcafee.com/VirusInfo/Vir...ey=100662#none

Look in the removal instructions tab....down load Stinger....

    Thanks Steve.

After seeing your response I spent 10 minutes googling and trying to search the mcafee website and I can NOT get it to show me the link you found. What search argument(s) did you use?

Stinger will not run. I get the 'Open With' dialogue for it too.

I tried the link for Fixswen.inf but it gives me a 404.

It started when the system picked up the Windows Debug System pest. I was following the removal instructions which started by telling me to run Rkill to stop the running processes which I would follow with MalWareBytes.

It is when I tried to run Rkill that the 'Open With' dialogue came up for all .exe files. I remembered using Fixswen.inf to resolve that problem a few years back but the link from then is dead now. I googled fixswen.inf and searched the Mcafee web site but couldn't find it anywhere.

That is what got me here. I have got Stinger running now. If I can get Rkill and Malwarebytes to run next and the problem persists I will give your suggestion a try too.

    Thanks ...g

Stinger ran but I still cannot launch Rkill or Malwarebytes. They both come up with the 'Open With' dialogue. I tried right click when opening the apps and Run As but I get "Runtime Error '372'...your version of vbalsgrid6.ocx may be outdated"

Malwarebytes will install and update Safe Mode with networking. So uninstall what you have and try that.

The problem is I cannot start ANY .exe files directly.

For instance I cannot start Notepad. When I try I get the 'Open With' dialogue. However, if I double click on a .txt file, Notepad opens the file.

I can't uninstall or install ANY programs until I get around this.

Did you try a bootable rescue disc like Kaspersky?

I haven't tried any rescue programs as Windows is starting OK.

I had this problem some years back and there was a quick fix to it. I can't be sure but I seem to remember that there had been a program that was intercepting all .exe calls and once it was removed this problem came up. I thought the fixswen.inf fixed it but I can't find the darn thing anymore.
