Touch Pad Mystery Icon

I've never liked touchpads. And my Toshiba recently purchased has reinforced my dislike for it. I've disabled the corners and I disabled the tapping. Now the problems are:

1. Mysteriously, if I move my finger on the touchpad and the arrow is moving as it should, sometimes this symbol comes up that is either a vertical rectangle about 1/2 inch long or its horizontal...What is this. What causes it to appear and how can it be disabled.

2. Sensitivity....say I'm in word...if my palms are on either side of the touch pad sometimes when I go to use the touchpad and one hand is still on the corner it causes the touchpad to freeze..sometimes it randomly moves the arrow and this is when I'm not on the touchpad but on the plastic on either side of this Toshiba.

It would be great to get an answer to each of these.

1. The highlighter can be disabled, do not remember where I did it.
2. Change the sensitivity setting.
