Waterdog Wearily Wages War With Who, What, Where and WHYYYYYYYYYYYY
FIRST >>>>>>>>>>> Train..............TY
glad to know someone's payin' attention
and not afraid to speak up.
*******************
In the first four and a half hours of Sunday morning, I have been able to accomplish the following -
1. crash hdd, Again
2. download (my close personal friend) SuSE 10.3, Again.
*******************
with this disclaimer - i dunnit speekinzee tekininloeegikal turninnologly didn nun good -
these are the main points
>>with only the "dead and now bourne again" powered up: I went into PM and set up the 100 Gig partition you recommended, NTFS
>>as expected, Win Install disk would not recognize a drive in any of four possible slots
>>so, off too recovery....away i did go
>>A sum total of the experience is:
No Boot Entries / couldn't SCAN / couldn't ADD / couldn't REBUILD
couldn't REDIRECT - because: "Failed to update Headless Redirection Configuration"
couldn't ENABLE any SERVICE, including DEMAND_START - because:
"NO Active ControlSet Key or System registry may be damaged"
This does make sense, as this hdd was "wiped" = all 0's
*******************************************
I am thinking that the 160 is probably going to remain Linux.
Unless, my next experiment works.
There would be some value to having a discrete Linux portal to the bigger world.
What better partition is there than a separate hdd. That would be a tough Dual Boot to beat.
For my next stupid trick, I'.m going to take the Seagate Unique Keys and Parent ID for the 160 and go shopping for info.............maybe find registry stuff or boot stuff............some stuff that will help the cause.
I've had enough for a while...................
Respects,
PS: anybody get the "born again" pun ?

Yet To Be Tried
...............Train -
"Or if you slipstream SP3 to XP SP1 cd, you should be able to do the same thing with XP as Linux does. The lack of the 48-bit is what is killing you."
gotta do a little more research yet........get back to you on this one
-
next, semi-bi-sometime-or other-check in
Linux is my friend ,
oh yes-sir-re:
treats me much better
than all them Windows
XP-eeeeeeeeeee
>>>to be honest, I've never used Linux prior to "The Event"
and, as I mentioned before, dunnit type goot nor do commnded primps well
but -
It has the apps i use, (when I can find them) and is more fault tolerant
than I have been led to believe
and
has extremely comprehensive hardware & software directories/file
>>if it just were more gooey (GUI)
>so many choices - so may commands - so little time!!!
..........................
After several more crash and burns on the "Seagate that came back to life",
I decided not to press my good fortune and have surrendered.
It is now running openSuSE 11.2,
complete with all the bells and whistles
(i.e., as many repositories and options as I could fit happily together).
{for those interested}
.................My experience with both direct and mirrored DVD downloads was nill.
six attempts = six "breaks"
..........my success came form a cd burn of the network download.
the disadvantage was a total installation time (includes updates and config.) of ...............
OVER TEN (10) HOURS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.................................................. ..........
with Sea-critter out of the loop & A Backup in place, I have returned to the:
"WTF is with XP/adventure"
In an attempt to make the biggest FUBAR {as possible }with this new WD 5oo gig :
.......... add mass controllers...........fail
......... use NTFS-3G (a file trans program with Windows similarities) and command line "demands"........fail
..............partition shrinks and language format combos.......fail
not to mention, pull and check and rearrange IDE/Power/etc connections
to and from mobo..........fail
.................................................. ...
I wish I could find a way to load the Sony Chipset and BIOS downloads;
......they're Windows and I (now) am only Linux......
.......I have not found a universal extractor that I would trust and (honestly)
don't know how else to do it.
It's all heading towards BIOS / CMOS / maybe a cable ? / &/or........$$$$$$$$$$
.....wonder if I could start from the beginning?
Windows 95 or .NET Framework and "rebuild" That would take a memory question out of the loop.
and (i've been told) Windows speaks the older languages better than NTFS
.............ah........who am I kiddin'. I 'm gonna go get drunk.........................
Respects,
-
just another bump in the road
...........kids: don't try this at home ....................
>>the goal / idea was to somehow "attach" my winXpeee info directly to a partition.
(my version of Train's slip-stream idea)
.........I wasn't able to copy the install disk.
But,
I got pass Microsoft guardian electron's by individually copying each file/html/etc.
....Then, after stashing them all back together in a Linux folder _ went to visit my hdd.
..............no language or format, nor partition size-resize would be "allowed" (sic., "mounted")
............tried to issue commands through the terminal but, again, "would not recognize" or
"could not open" or "not permitted" .
.........went to "boot loader".
..........wanna guess what happened?
..........Using a "chain-loader" option (for other OS)
I configured it to use "Fail-safe" as default, with my WinXpeee
attached to the kernel. I specified the MBR to incorporate the WinXpeee at boot.
It went as planned except that I lost root permission . ???????????
For whatever the reason,,,,,,,,,,I was unable to even issue "shutdown" (-r or -h)
The result was a single option. The new reality is I now have openSuSE 11.2 on the WD 500 gig as well as my Seagaitor"
...........I'm gettin' much better= cut the install time down to 8.5 hrs.............
...............THUS.....
The 500 will be "plan B" (B=backup) and I am going to go and do What I already know is also doomed............try to download Vaio factory settings and drivers and chipset and BIOS and other fun stuff. Somehow. I swear to Heaven..........somehow, i'm gonna do it.
....What's the worse that could happen?
and another thing...............I have now decided to blame all my troubles on Microsoft.
........ever hear of the "Prescott C-O Stepping Patch" ???????
..........yeah.........that's what did it
Roger Ramjet, over and out

Updated Body Count
if any one is still following:
we now know:
1.Waterdog don't give up easy
2.Dog ain't 2 bright
3.he still thinks the reason Xpeeeee won't boot
is in software/language/BIOS. (maybe just one or two pissed off electrons)
(add to the list)
4.Fun money is limited and he hopes to curry God 's favor
before heaven demands a new mobo.
>>>updated “don't work” list:
(in various combinations of “iso” burns to CD &/or Dvd &/or USB stick as well as command line attempts to install )
DOS versions, Win 95, Win 98, nor Millenium Edition
this includes direct downloads from the Microsoft website as well as other sites, like this one
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
this might be useful to someone else;
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...displayLang=en
(it's purported to be a windows 'assistant'.) (Lord knows, assistance is appreciated..........)
also “NOT” = failed language cloning and “virtualization” attempts using VMWare, wine, winerar and winzip and OS”s like these
http://www.pingdom.com/
by the by, if there are any other Linux newbies: lot's of one-clickers here:
http://linux.wareseeker.com/
I have yet to explore Samba possibilities and have downloaded a “build” utility to get in trouble with.
For the record – the 5oo gig WD is working faultlessly and consistently with 11.2 and let's me do what is important.........while,
meanwhile,
the total number of crashes on the 160 which was dead – born again - dead - “bourne” again, etc. is now Six.
But, she keeps on tickin' …..ain't that interesting ?
…............Respects to all
.ps = had previously downloaded Sony BIOS from their site, using Windows . . but could not upload the download using my Linux Box. Why ? It aint fair

sorry

Best I can figure out is you have a bad controller on the motherboard. I think both the IDE and floppy controllers are bad.

Hello Train...........waz up. glad to hear from ya'
i fear ur right . . and that it could be even worse.
Just for fun ( you know how much i enjoy wasting my time and all) i took my old "Sea Tools"
DOS cd and did two things.
1. verified the hdd is good, in all its "160.042 GB" (fyi>>their numbers, not mine)
2. did a "full" erase (filled it with all "0's" - according to them).
(I have been long suspicious of the win install disk telling me there was a partition on the drive that supposedly didn't exist)
i then tried to install win.........got "error number four" and something about couldn't install a library
..........muttering things i can't write here, i'm gonna investigate that later.
I have sent off a request (complete with begging and pleading) to Sony's Customer Service
for a set of original Recovery disks............it's theoretically possible that it could work.
(i hate the taste of humble pie, but, the truth is...i destroyed mine in a fit of frustration and anger
>>>>a lesson for you kids out there..........temper, temper, temper)
is all 4 now
........the saga continues............

FOR MONTHS I'VE BEEN PULLING HAIR, DODGING MONEY, DOING STUPID EXPERIMENTS,
BEATING MYSELF UP............ALL THIS WASTE OF TIME .TO TAKE A PAIR OF RECOVERY DISKS
PLUG-IN, TURN-ON AND REBOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HH/...........
YEAH, THAT'T RIGHT, WINDOWS xpeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee is on my drive and on my screen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WTF, WTF, WTF, WTF, WTF.......................
F*****G SONY AND THIER HIDDEN PARTITIONS

........Happy Trails.........
First: thanks - Train, Rocketmech & Midknyte
your input is appreciated !
...............................................
well, okay then: Boys And Girls>>>>>>>>what did we learn?
>>1, Never. NEVER.....give up "."(period)
>>2. Once a Sony. Always a Sony. ..and that's the way it is.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,
Even in hindsight i doubt i would have had the foresight, to believe it was a recovery disk issue.
.............even now, i can't prove it. It's just my best guess.
i believe that my recovery disks were somehow corrupted either as a result of language mutation during my ill-fated file update or; perhaps previously: by another unknown cause.
All i can say with certainty is that i am using the hdd i wrote off as "dead" and the only thing i truly changed was to "fill it with 0's" and reboot with - NEW / Factory / Model Specific / Virgin / Recovery Disks.
This fact, tied together with my UNSWERVING BELIEF THAT SONY HAS HIDDEN LIMITS
BUILT INTO THE MOTHERBOARD caused my dismay and was, in the final analysis the only way I could have solved it (without a COMPLETELY NEW MOBO).
That's my opinion..................I'm stickin' to it................
You, of course, can choose your own reality
..................................................
Welcome to 2010 everyone. May heaven watch over you
and blah blah blah
The deed is done. I've said my last word
