IE8 is shutting down even after fresh install
IE was shutting down on this system pretty often, bu there were also a bunch of trojans on it. So I formatted the c drive, reinstalled xp pro, office, avira, ad-aware, spybot, and, spywareblaster and left the D partition where the data is alone. For some reason, IE is still shutting down out of the blue and sometimes it still freezes. I did notice when I installed the drivers for the motherboard, that one did not install. It's called the ATM something driver ( it's a pcchips mobo).
What could be causing this? Could it be because I did not format the d partition? Most viruses and spyware usually attack the c drive. Do any attack a partition that does not have an OS?
Please advise. Thanks!
Yes there are nasties that go after about everything on a computer and also ones that are on the same lan.
"ATM something driver"
What exactly is missing, complete nesseage is needed.
"pcchips mobo" <shudder>
post the model.
LOL. So do you suggest that I reformat the D drive, or do you think I have to redo everything again since IE is crashing again?
The driver that is missing is the ATM Network Controller. The mobo's cd installed every driver automatically. There was no picking and choosing, although I can if need be.
The model of the mobo is PCChips M863G.
Socket A motherboard.
ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode)
Sounds like may not be the original nic. Is it a PCI card?
If yes, purchase a new card and replace it. $20 should be plenty to pay.
Also, you have to remember that IE8 was designed for Vista and never has played well with XP. IMHO you'd be better off removing it and sticking with IE7.
Thank God we're not getting all of the government we're paying for!
OK. Thanks, guys.
Not sure if it is a PCI card. Will have to check.
Thanks for the tip on IE8. Is that pretty much the general consensus?
Here's the latest:
First I got the error message that said Internet Explorer had encountered an error and had to shut down and then the screen froze and I couldn't do anything. Then another error screen appeared with a big red X with the following error message:
Sysfader: iexplore.exe - Application Error
X The instruction at "0x02974112" referenced memory at "0x02c56ab0."
The memory could not be read.
Click OK to terminate the program.
Everything was frozen and I couldn't click on anything so I did alt-ctrl delete and got the Task Lisk and closed out Internet Explorer and the error message, and opened up Firefox.
Will getting a new NIC (still have to check if it's internal or a NIC) and downgrading to IE7 fix this, or does this info point to something new?
Would like to fix this asap, so anyone have any thoughts on this?
Go into safe mode and un-install ie8, reboot the computer go back into safe mode and re-install.
Also before re-installing ie8 run the driver installer and see if it installs correctly while in safe mode. Then go ahead with the ie8 re-installation.
