Hard drive Tattoo - what is it??

After many years of working with computers, I just came across the terms of tattooing hard drives and motherboards. What does this mean???

HP called their process of marking the bios "tattooing". I'm not sure if that's what you mean, but it's an authentication for their recovery discs. You have to tattoo HP motherboards after you replace them or else the recovery discs will error out, usually with a "code purple" error.
