annoying clicking noise

I recently formatted my computer and everything works relatively good except I get that annoying clicking noise. I am using windows XP and have already went to control panel and set "start navigation" to none. I have also removed Internet explorer since I am using Firefox. I did a system check upon boot and then when the computer did boot and I wasn't even near it, the clicking noise still happened every four or five seconds with just my desktop showing.
What the help do i do to fix this??

Where is the clicking noise coming from? The hard drive? If the hard drive is clicking that would explain the crash. A new hard drive would be in order.

No---- I'm talking about the annoying clicking sound that Microsoft built into windows when you navigate internet explorer or windows explorer!!!

What clciking noise? I have never, ever heard any noise when I am using IE or Windows explorer.

None of my systems do it.

I think he's referring to START.WAV in the Media folder.

You will have to go through each sound event in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and find which event is using that sound.

wow you guys aren't up on this one too much are you. Here is a link from a google search i did before i posted in this forum that clearly shows that this has been noted by other people and is a true built in fact of windows.

I have used these links to disable "start Navigation" BipolarBill, and there is no other events associated with this.

I agree with Bipolar. But the name of the sound you are looking for is called "Windows XP Start.wav". In your sounds scroll down to Windows Explorer then to Start Navigation. Just blank out the sound if you don't like the clicking. But I MUST add that if this is the extent of your problems, you have a pretty good life! Merry Christmas all! Yes, I said CHRISTmas! Deal with it!

Your temper is going to get you in trouble. Chill out. If you really think that we know every little screwup that happens in Windows, you are in for a rude awakening. Besides, this is not a competition. No one really cares if you fix this little annoyance or not. We are willing to help, so give us credit. If that's not enough for you, there are other help forums where you can tick people off.

First go into the Windows > Media folder and play each of the sounds to find out which one it is *exactly* and then check each event. It's obvious to me that it's a 3rd-party application that's generating it. You will notice that there are 3rd-party apps listed in the Sounds tab.

I played all the sounds but nothing played for the one that says "windows XP Start"
None of them had the click sound.

Well then, you have a rogue program that is using it's own sound. Until you can identify the sound file, there's not a lot that can be done.

You can try searching your hard drives for "*.WAV" without the quotes. The asterisk is a wildcard so that the search will find all WAV files. Play each one to find out which sound matches and then where it's located. You can right-click the file and select "open containing folder" to find where its kept.

No luck as far as that went however I closed my Bitdefender program and it stopped. So I will have to experiment with that a little. There was no temper involved but rather frustration extreme. I just wish some people would read what was actually typed in the first place. You helped me on some other issues BipolarBill so I am grateful.

I never heard the clicking before because I stopped using IE back when it was version 4.0 because I started using Firefox browser. I could stand all the spyware and viruses that IE allows in.

The sound that you'd be looking for is Windows Explorer | Start Navigation; it's the WindowsXPStart.wav sound as was noted above.

As far as reading what's posted - If you come here asking for help, please be so kind as to do so yourself. You seemed so intent on tripping someone up that you blew off the two people who told you what the problem was, based on how you described the problem. Remember, we're only going on what you typed in post #3.

After two years of debugging computers on a daily basis, you're the first person I ever saw whose BitDefender install caused his computer to click. Does not compute.
