Choosing/Buying a CPU for an older PC

We now have a donation of an ASUS VX97 motherboard but it has no cpu. The downloaded manual lists as supported Intel Pentium 75-233; (P55C-MMX), (P54C/P54CS) IBM Cyrix 6 x 86 (Rev 2.7 or later) IBM Cyrix 6 x 86 MX; AMD K6 PR166-PR233. Which of these would you recommend we look for and retailers for out of date cpus? thanks for any input

From the look of this motherboard :-

    http://iceberg.pchomeworld.com/cgi-w...sp?Part=MB5702

it looks like an old AT format and uses EDO/SDRAM simms.

It also seems that the board can run a 83 MHz FSB :-

    http://www.sysopt.com/mb83mhz.html

I can't find out what the multipliers are but if it was me I'd pick probably a K5 and run it at 83MHz so if you have say a x4 muliplier you might get it running at 333MHz but I think we need some more input to confirm this. It should have at least a 3.5x multiplier because if memory serves me right when it runs 233MHz cpu's it's set at 3.5x66 = 231MHz but at 83 MHz it would be 290MHz. Only problem would be the ram....it would have to be able to run at 83 MHz.

Socket 7 CPU's have sold for £3 here on ebay in the UK so you haven't got alot to lose.

Tell me the max multiplier you have.

    hope this helps
