The disk in drive J is not formatted.
Do you want to format it now?

i dwld the file above and finally managed to format the pen drive after 4 attempts.(i had to unplugged the device 3 times and reconnect it ).
but again i have some problems ,when i try to transfer a file to the removable disk sometimes it goes though without any problems and sometimes i get the following error:
    error copying file or folder

cannot copy "filename" : cannot find the specified file.

make sure you specify the correct path and file name

and when i open the removable disk ,all the files transfered previously had disappeared. And i have to disconnect and reconnect it for nth times before actually
it detect the files else it gives me the message to format it .

it's completely weird ,i suspect the device is faulty .what can i do more?

Buy a new one. Watch the ads and you may find a great deal. They are not that expensive.

    That is your problem!

Install all of the hundreds of Microsoft security updates and service packs.

You are obviously infected with numerous viruses and spyware which is preventing you from using the pendrive.

DO NOT install XP's ServicePack 2 until you are cleaned of malware. Doing so "grandfathers" the malware and removal programs will treat it as part of XP, not malware.

Install up to ServicePack 1a, then follow the procedures at this forum or similar to get cleaned out.

Fine by me, since the link in my post is in that thread. Otherwise, I stand by what I said. Putting SP2 on an infected computer before it's cleaned out causes megaproblems.

Are u sure it's a virus and malware problem cause i am well protected against those things.i have zone alarm firewall, adaware and spyware doctor.so far i have not had any virus/malware/spyware.i also have a 128mb kingston and a 256mb twinmos pendrive and never had this type of problems.anyway i will try the programs listed in the tread on malware /spyware.
is there any alternative way instead of installing win xp sp1 or sp2 cause it will make my pc very slow

SP1 and SP2 do not cause problems or slowness, as long as they are installed on a legitimate (not pirate software) and malware-free install of WinXP. In fact, they contain many system patches and driver updates including those for USB devices.

No one can be certain of what your computer contains without having seen it. The next best thing is your description of its performance, and our experiences in dealing with what you describe; but it's still educated guessing.

the problem is that my cpu is only 800 mghz amd i have only 448mb of ram plus i have zone alarm and avg free edition running in the background. i am sure installing sp2 will make it slow and actually i even disable automatic updates. i was wandering if there is any fix from microsoft to resolve only this issue.

you need to install at least SP1. it added proper USB 2.0 support. service packs add a lot of fixes and features. if you choose not to install them, then you're shooting yourself in the foot.

You might as well run Win95, Win98, or Win2K instead of XP?
