Compaq presario 5000 proc upgrade?
anybody got any idea if I can put a faster processor in this thing? - I know, buy a new machine - well, the kid just wants to go faster and I have to stay within the constraints, frustrating as it is.
It's a 5V280 with a UWave mobo and a 900MHz AMD Duron(?) proc. If I could figure out what model motherboard it was, I could answer this myself, but since it was manufactured for Compaq, well... Any idea where I can find tech specs? Is it possibile to put a 1.1G or so in it?
Thanks, Clockedover (tried a 800FSB proc in a board set up for 1066 straps - limited overclock. The ASUS P5B deluxe).

A 1300 Duron (13x100) should work in there but that will be as far as you can take it.
Aida32 may be able to tell you something about the board but you will still have to get the latest BIOS update from Compaq in order to get the most from that board.
That shows you have a
Duron-850 MMX 453 pins
The fastest made was
Athlon-1.4G MMX 453 pin
A real good site on cpus.
For what it will cost in money and aggravation, a new self-built PC would be a much better idea.
Stark Raving MOD
With a system that old, you'd be stuck with searching ebay or craiglist for parts. no store is going to have those in inventory.
Presario 5000 is a SERIES not a model number. open the bottom front cover (cd holder area) to find the real model.
Thanks Guys! -- Good info. Also, there's two rev's to this mobo, I found out. Later one with KT133A chipset will handle Athlon A up to (tested) 1800+, tech guy at local computermegastore says could go upto 2600+ on it. But, PC133 RAM, so who'd wanna when you can get a 3600+ with a Biostar K8M800 mobo and 512M Corsair DDR 667 for $120? Oh, and have to get a PSU...
Mod w/ an attitude
So till you get a processor, RAM, and a new power supply you are close to want you can get as a refurbed PC.
