How do I set a static router ip?

    Hi,

Can anybody tell me how I may be able to give my laptop a static ip from router? The reason why I want to do this is because I am using the laptop to connect to Xbox Live and I need to keep some ports forwarded for an optimal connection to the service.

My Linksys WRT54G seems to change the laptop's ip all the time. Sometimes I see it as 192.168.1.103, .106, .102, .107, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

your router will not give a static IP. you must set the IP on your WORKSTATION. use an IP that is outside the DHCP range. linksys defaults to 192.168.1.100 for the first DHCP client, so use something like 192.168.1.50

In the TCP/IP properties of the computer's Network Connection, uncheck the Obtain IP address Auto, and type the Static IP keeping in mind what Midknyte posted above.

    Hey,

I have a problem. I need to bridge the local area connection with the wireless connection or else I won't get a good connection to XBL games, so I changed the TCP/IP properties of the Network Bridge (as instructed above).

When i do this the internet connection no longer works...but the status still says connected.

Does anyone know why this is? Thanks.

Do you have something plugged in to the LAN port on your laptop?
