win98 install failure
I am trying to install win 98 on a 233mhz AMD, Amibios, 64mb ram, on board video and sound. Everytime i load and reboot i get the following error"error while loading configmgm (or IOS), windows protection error. sometimes it will ask to go to safe mode and say that HIMEM is not loaded, error in XMS memory then go to above windows error. I have asked question once and received some great responses and have tried them all, to no avail. I have flashed bios, fdisked several times, formatted hd several times, loaded win 98 several times and even tried loading win95. The internal cache and external have been disabled. Any ideas?

Not sure if this will solve your problem, but I had a similar one, and it turned out that I had clocked my PC at a higher FSB speed than my memory would support. I backed down the FSB speed, and the errors went away. If you flashed your bios, its entirely possible that your configuration is incorrect for the CPU you have installed (ie: wrong FSB speed, incorrect CPU multiplier settings, wrong RAM timings, etc. etc.) because a bios flash will often reset all of the configurations to a default.
Could also be that you may have a bad piece of RAM, or that your current one needs to be re-seated in the slot.
Again, sorry if this doesn't solve your issue, or is the incorrect resolution, but its something you can easily do to give it a shot at a fix.
Good luck
