In certain games like GTA, gears of war, and even Counter strike - you can approach your opponent with a chainsaw and cut them in half, get a head shot from a mile away with a 50 cal sniper rifle, and even beat an unsuspecting podestrian to death and take his money... but during the game if you should say the F bomb over the voice chat that some of these games provide (excluding gta i know), you may be subject to an admin or host threatening to boot you due to your language... and that is one of the biggest ongoing oxymorons i have ever witnessed. Now when it comes to racial slurs and such I can understand and I do support. But if you are a slight potty mouth, people get offended or even outraged that you said a "bad" word after getting stabbed in the head from behind. Even in this forum... I see people being scolded about saying something like " peice of ....." well... you know the rest. Yes i know rules are rules and they are made to be followed but I cant see why people get so riled up over something as petty as bad language. Now Im not trying to make any waves here. Ive been a long time reader to this forum and I respect what you guys do here. But sometimes I read you admins getting on a person for language( even though its censored) and my only reply is "So what?". I just had to get this off my chest because I was reading one thread of a complete character assassination of a member from a certain admin for his language and to be honest, the member really didnt say anything crazy. Not going to get into specifics, just explaining where this came from. Thanks for reading

No one will agree with me, but I don't think the swear blockers help. Even kids understand what is getting blocked and will still think it funny. Just like when they bleep out words on TV, I always knew what they were saying, it doesn't take much of an IQ to figure out what mother*bleep* meant.

Besides, kids hear more of it at school and TV than they will the internet.

However, you should be able to express yourself w/o swearing. Use smilies.

Im not condoning profanity. Im not even saying it should be allowed in the forum. Im just saying that its alittle crazy how people try to shelter kids from the real world and how censorship is a giant oxymoron. Whether you like it or not, violence and profanity is real life. As a service member, Im exposed to profanity and death and war all day long. And whether people like it or not, so are there kids. Flip to CNN and watch the beheading of an american POW, and than after that put on the discovery channel and watch an african village die of a flesh eating disease. Cursing/Swearing/Profanity should be the least of your worries. I dont have children but I have many young siblings ranging from 1yrs of age all the way to 15 split among 2 house holds. One house hold I have 2 brothers that are 12 and 15. Both play Gears Of War religiously. Now what they say in the game I dont condone my brothers to repeat out of sheer respect for my mother. But besides that, if they are well mannered among people outside of the house, it really wouldnt bother me if they slipped here and there. Im not telling anyone how to raise their children, or that they are wrong for disagreeing with me. Im just voicing an opinion.

And as for the paragraph remark, did you happen to check my spelling and see if my punctuation was correct too?

If you don't care about your little 12 year old precious angel spilling blood and guts and getting gleeful excitement out of a headshot with a sniper rifle, then why do you care if he reads/hears the same words he hears--and probably uses--every day at school????

As for your comment SRJ, it's cute in an illogical sense but just falls WAY short of realistic. How about this: "If you cannot express yourself without the use of conjunctions - do not express yourself." Swear words, whether you like it or not, have a place in the languages of the world, and some sentiments can only be truly explained by using them.

As for this site specifically, if you filter out the words, what do you care what's actually typed behind them? I recall getting chastised for actually typing a bunch of asterisks one time--I didn't even type a word that was filtered. That's when you know it's gone overboard.

Look folks, we let our kids watch violent war stuff on TV, play voilent war games on the computer and xbox/ps/etc., and then we cry foul when some soldier in an ACTUAL war zone tosses out an expletive on the news?????????????

I say, get your collective heads out of that 98.6 degree cave you have them in and join us back in the real world.

Your argument fails at the fact that not all 12 year old parents allow their children to play violent video games, watch violent movies or want their children to be exposed to swear words on a regular basis.

However, all children are exposed to potty mouth wheather their parents like it or not. But the majority of parents try to protect their children from bad external influences like GTA or Eyes Wide Shut! And if they have any parental controls turned on, they can (with confidence) put sysopt on the allow list.

You are correct that not all situations fall into the situation I described, but most do. It's the hypocritical moron parents (usually the Christian fruitcakes), who just don't get it.

In the end, it's the parents responsibility, end of story.

Think of schools...

Any kid that picks up swearing from their parents, other people on the street, etc. will think it awesome and cool to talk that way, and therefore, spread it to his or her friends.

Parents...

As mentioned earlier, parents can be the root of that. My parents swear like it's nothing new (and it isn't) around my lil sis (well, I have one that is 6 and one that is 3) and that is just perfectly normal. Assuming that it is okay to speak like that, the child may figure it is okay to speak like that.

Those are examples of real life. Theys gonna pick up bad language eventually, so why sheild them from the media, internet, and other sources? That also goes for violence, too.

Listen Linda, I'm not advocating a run on child-corruption. The brains of children just aren't advanced enough for certain issues and you shouldn't, as a parent, just let your kids do, hear, see, or say whatever because "they're eventually going to be exposed to it anyway." Hell, ya might as well just kill them young since they're going to die one day anyway if you believe that. Kids should be sheltered from certain things at certain times.

It's not the idea of removing these negative influences from your kids' lives that I take issue with here, it's the idea that poor parenting skills are the driving force behind our society removing CERTAIN influences while allowing WORSE ones to stay put.
