Remove the board from the case, place it on a soft, non-conductive surface near the case and plug in the ATX power. Leave in the CPU and RAM. Place the vid card in and connect the monitor. Connect the power. Nothing else needs to be connected. Press down hard on the vid card and use your screwdriver to short the POWER BUTTON pins. See if it POSTs.

should it not post regardless of weather the display card is in or not?

Yes it should try to post, but you will get an error beep for no video. How would if it posted if the video card is not plugged in?

Does the power supply have an extra cable for a fan control that needs to be plugged into the mobo? Is the CPU power plug also plugged into the mobo?

Actually, no. Motherboard logic dictates that, since you can't see without video, the motherboard will not boot without video.

I also removed vid card & rebooted & no bleeps so i think the case speaker is fubar'd so i will replace and see if a bios bleep code shows its face will report back with outcome

did you try just one stick of ram or a different brand of ram? what brand of ram do you have? I've seen a few compatibility issues.

you could try an old PCI (not e) card just to see if the system will post.

yes midknyte i have tried 3 different brands crucial, geil & micron and tried 1 stick on its own in all 4 slots ( b1 is the slot for one only)
i am going to get a cheap pci card at the weekend to see if i can at least seperate the problem down to graphics or board & processor
i don't suppose anyone has heard of maybe any bios issues with this board & vid card?

Just wondering, why ARE you running an ATI video card on an SLI board?

The earlier Nvidia SLI boards had issues with ATI cards, but I thought that was settled already. Never say never, though.

i only use ATI cards, prefer the quality, that was why i asked about the bios, the board is about 12 months old so i guess we may be identifying a possible problem here
    Thanks for the pointer midknyte

ok found the problem there was a broken wire in the 4 pin 12v mobo connector on a brand new enermax psu changed the psu and it worked, unplugged the 4 pin 12 v line and got the same effect
