System ram problems?
Alright, I have a e-machine but i have no idea what model it is, I've replaced the case a lot, but recently I took out it's 256 DDR PC3200U CL3 ram sticks and I cant remember how to put them in right, I've tried about a lot of times but every time I start my computer, it will start but the monitor will stay blank, but yet on my other computer the monitor works fine, can anyone help me out here? I really need to find out , because I want to give this computer to my brother because he needs one and he is only in town until tomorrow so I really need to know, thanks in advance.
Note: Here is a picture of the four places I could put these two sticks, no idea what way or what ones to put them in.

and here is a picture of the ddr sticks:

Sorry for the crappy quality, they're taken by my camera phone. If you need my comp specs look here just scroll down a bit.

If you are using DDR memory, the computer cant be too old, inwhich case, the memory should be able to go into any of the slots. However, I would stay with slots 0 and 1, or 2 and 3. The memory sticks will only go in ONE WAY. You will note that the little notch between the rows of gold contacts is offset to one side (there are more contacts on one side of the notch than the other).
Be sure the plastic clips at the ends of the memory slots are fully open (rotated out) as far as they will go. line up the memory stick with the notches in the right place, and push down firmly with your thumbs. As the memory stick seats, it will automatically close the end clips into the snapped in position. Don't worry if it seems to take what seems like a lot of pressure to pop then in.

Thanks but wh at way should they be facing?

as stated, there is only one way the dimm will fit. match up the notch and push the dimm in. it should be perpendicular to the motherboard. if it is not level, you did it wrong.
-
Hmm... well they'll go in all ways... so it doesn't matter?
-
Stark Raving MOD
yes it DOES matter. you could short out the ram or motherboard. all the dimms should be exactly parallel to each other.
try one stick at a time.

I've tried to put them in but I have the same problem, I took a close look at my sticks and I noticed that some of the goldish rectangles are missing... Is that bad?
-
There shouldn't be any contact pins missing, and they can only go in one way. The sticks are keyed so that one side has more pins than the other, it won't fit the other way around, if you somehow managed to "make" it fit both ways, you broke something.

those are contacts. you should not have any missing. where did you get that memory?
-
From the computer I'm trying to put them back in.

Stark Raving MOD
so it's the stock ram? are they both missing the same contacts? do you have another stick of ram you can test with?
did you try one stick at a time like I said?

Mod w/ an attitude
It almost looks like those sticks are SDRAM because of the missing contact near the right end.
I wonder if someone tried to force them into another system that used SDRAM instead of DDR RAM?
Look closely at the 4 slots. There is a slot key in each slot. If that key does not align with the RAM slot, then flip the stick around and try that way. DO NOT force the stick into the slot or you will damage the slot, the stick, or both.

No, one of them is missing more than the other, I tried one at a time.

something is wrong with that ram if you are missing several contacts. I looked at mine and NONE are missing.
you can get new ram and try it, but the motherboard might also be damaged at this point.

LOL, he's probably talking about the contacts that are missing at the KEY d00dz.
